Acne can be one of the most frustrating things, especially once you’re past the teenage years.  People keep telling you it will pass but there just doesn’t seem to be an end in sight.  Thankfully there are a number of things you can do today to start seeing clearer skin tomorrow (and every day after that.)  Here are a few easy suggestions:

1.) Be careful what you put on your face

The first thing you can do on your path to healthy and beautiful skin is choose your skin care products wisely.  It can be very confusing trying to decide on a facial cleanser, moisturizer, toner, scrub, etc.  The options seem to be endless and the prices can vary widely, this is why it’s important to do your research and make an educated decision.  Just because something is expensive doesn’t always mean it’s the best and something that is made for “all” skin types can sometimes do more harm than good.  It’s also important to not overwhelm your skin with too many types of treatment.  Piling on the masks, tonics, peels and other things may lead you to believe you’re getting your skin really clean, but you may actually be irritating your skin more and causing more breakouts.

The B vitamins are very popular in the supplement world, but did you know that Vitamin B5 (also known as pantothenic acid) is very effective against acne?  A study performed in 1995 tested the effect of high doses of pantothenic acid on participants with mild to moderate acne.  The results were astounding and many study participants started to see their blemishes clear up as quickly as four weeks after starting the trial.  The reason it works is Vitamin B5 directly affects the skin’s production of sebum, keeping the levels low enough to avoid clogged pores and eventual breakouts.

3.) Keep stress levels to a minimum

Stress has been shown to affect a person’s complexion because of the hormones released during times of high stress.  Unfortunately, most of the time acne causes stress, which then causes more acne, so do what you can to break the vicious cycle.  There are many ways to reduce stress including meditation and exercise.  Not only does exercise help to reduce stress it also increases blood circulation which can help keep your skin healthy and clear.

4.) Drink plenty of water

By not drinking adequate amounts of water each day you leave yourself open to becoming dehydrated.  When you’re dehydrated dead skin cells build up on your body and clog your pores.  When the dead skin cells mix with fatty oils and bacteria they can turn into a splotchy blemish.  When you drink enough water your skin stays hydrated and the dead skin cells are able to shed more easily.

Acne can affect people of all ages, race and genders and for any number of reasons.  Don’t despair if you’re someone with chronic acne, there are lots of treatment options available to you.  Sometimes a few small changes can make a big difference in your complexion.
