Last week, Lipstick's first-ever guest editor Coco Rocha told us all about her relationship with beauty. In today's installment, the supermodel reveals her favorite beauty must-haves.
You seem to genuinely love makeup. Do you remember your first encounter with it? What it was? Who introduced you to it?
"My first forays into makeup were in ballet as a little girl. It was stage makeup, which is really heavy-handed and exaggerated. I remember not enjoying it at all as a little girl. In school, I really didn't wear much makeup until I started modeling at 14, and then I never looked back!"
Your beauty area in your closet is truly a work of art. Tell us what’s there now.
"At the moment I'm loving Tatcha Pure One Step Camellia Cleansing Oil. After removing my makeup, I use this product, and I am always surprised at how much makeup is actually left over! I also really like Tatcha Ageless Revitalizing Eye Cream for under my eyes. It's thick and feels like it's doing the job after a hard day’s work. The Tatcha brand is made in Japan and is based on a 200-year-old beauty regime the geishas followed; it's really interesting if you look it up. My favorite cover-up is L'Oréal True Match. It's sometimes hard to find something that doesn't make me look too orange or too pasty with my pale skin, but their classic ivory goes on really well and blends so nicely. As much as the products are important, so are your tools. My favorite brushes at the moment are from Mary Kay. They are firm but not uncomfortable, and you never lose bristles like you do with some brushes."
How often do products get rotated in and out?
"It’s so important for the health of your skin to keep in mind that makeup, like food, has an expiration date, and if you go too far beyond that date, you're really doing more damage than good. I've gotten much, much better about this. Lipsticks, blush, and foundation I will usually throw out at around a year. Creams should go about every six months. Eye makeup and mascaras, you should probably change up every three months. If you set yourself a date on the calendar, its a good excuse to go beauty shopping for new colors!"
Do you have a system you use to organize everything?
"Generally I group like products together and then separate by colors. I'm the kind of girl who likes to be able to see everything all at once and then make my choices. I wear makeup every day, so I try to keep it tidy as I use it—or by the end of the week, it's complete chaos."
Fill in the beauty blank: I am on an endless quest for the perfect___________.
"Symmetrical eyebrows! To this day that has eluded me."
