Because Kate Upton went big with her voluminous Dolce & Gabbana dress at at the LA premiere of The Other Woman last night, hairstylist Peter Butler decided to play with proportion by creating a bun hairstyle that was sleek, yet had lift at the roots. Here's how he did it—and pay attention to steps two and three. Those are key!
Step 1) Starting with Kate’s hair damp, he applied three big dollops of Leonor Greyl’s Mousse au Lotus Volumatrice, to her damp hair (one on the top of her head, one split between the sides, and one on the back), then blew out her hair with a paddle brush for volume, spraying Spray Structure Naturelle as he went for more lift.
Step 2) Next, Peter applied the tiniest bit of Eclat Naturel to each section of hair before curling with a large-barrel curling wand. “It gave the hair a bit more texture, an almost wet look, and nice separation for when I combed it out. This was really the key product to her look as it created that nice sleek, wet look we wanted.”
Step 3) After finishing curling the entire head, Peter pulled Kate’s hair back with his fingers and put it into a ponytail with an elastic band with hooks (you can see it here in his Instagram shot:
“This really keeps the ponytail in place so the hair doesn’t slide and get loose afterwards.”
Step 4) He wrapped the ponytail around the base and used 4 hairpins to secure it in place.
Step 5) He misted the hair with Laque Souple to keep the shape all night.
