The last time celebrity makeup artist Nick Barose described one of his clients as a future It Girl, he was referring to none other than Lupita Nyong'o. So we kiiinda trust him when he says British actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw is the next newcomer we'll be breathlessly tracking on the red carpet. That's where she was last night, attending the Belle premiere at the Paris theater in NYC, and Nick was the man behind her makeup. Even by Lupita standards, she didn't disappoint. “Gugu was wearing a green dress that had a gorgeous golden sheen to it, and her jewelry had purple tones, so we went with a subtle eye, incorporating purple but keeping it soft," Nick explains. "The whole look is fresh—springy sun-kissed skin with soft, plum smokey eyes and peach lips and cheeks."
For the eyes, Nick used the Tom Ford Eye Colour Quad in Lavender Lust. "To add lift and elongate her eye shape, I applied two coats of Votre Vu Eiffel Power Mascara, concentrating on the outer corners," he says. On her lips: Chanel’s Glossimer in 119.
There was also a finishing touch to ready Gugu for her skin-baring Lanvin gown. "To keep her skin looking fresh and luminous but minus the grease, I massaged Juara Tiare Jasmine Tea Body Milk in her shoulders, arms and legs," Nick says. "Something lighter like this is perfect for spring because it won't get sticky or stain the clothes."
