Hi, my name is Jennifer and I am an exfoliating addict.
I love the feeling of being able to buff and polish away dead, flaky skin every morning in the shower. If I don’t exfoliate, I feel like my makeup doesn’t go on as smoothly and my skin just feels rough and bumpy. I’ve also heard that if you have blackheads or clogged pores it simply means you’re not exfoliating enough. I have both, so I’m always eager to try the next best exfoliating product out there.
Goldfaden MD’s Doctor Scrub ($75) contains ruby crystals, so I was delighted and intrigued to get a chance to try it out. The good doctor describes this as a “daily exfoliant.” However, I found it quite abrasive, even for my thick skin. After a few uses I noticed some tiny broken capillaries on my checks and below my eyes. I found this product to be much more suited as a body scrub, working quite nicely on my unfortunate keratosis pilaris, the chicken skin bumps on my arms and legs.
Ruby crystals or not, I am not sure the price is justified whether you use it as a body or facial scrub. Bottom line is: yes, it’s an effective microdermabrasion-style at-home exfoliator, but I wouldn’t recommend it for daily use. And you can get the same results from a .99-cent box of baking soda without the irritation.
