Great Retinoids to Help Fight Aging
Ask Dr. Bailey: How to Treat Deep Vertical Chest Wrinkles
I was asked by a blog reader if I prescribe tretinoin (Retin-A) to treat one of the most common aging skin problems on the chest – deep wrinkles. In this area, skin is often also covered with red and brown blotchy color, crinkles, and crepey wrinkles. These same issues are true for the neck […]

Rush Hour Actress Aimee Garcia on Her New Show, Beauty Secrets, and What It's Like to Be a Latina on TV
Some fans know actress Aimee Garcia from Showtime's Dexter (she played the lovable Jamie Batista, Dexter's nanny), while others enjoyed her on George Lopez. (And super fanatics might remember her turn as a struggling dancer, alongside Gina Rodriguez, in the 2011 film Go For It!) Regardless of how familiar you are with her extensive resume, however, you can't deny one thing—the woman is crazy charismatic. The self-described "Mexi-Rican from Chicago" will next be seen on Rush Hour, the CBS action comedy show based on the blockbuster franchise that premieres this April, where she plays detective Didi Diaz. It's a fitting role for Garcia, who is clearly a bit of a beauty sleuth. Obviously, we had to invite her over to talk all things makeup, TV, and more. Listen in.
GLAM BELLEZA LATINA: Congrats on Rush Hour! Tell us about your role.
AIMEE GARCIA: She [her character Didi] is a babe detective! I love that she's super professional. She's funny. She's smart. I also get to sprinkle in some Spanish because it's my first language, and I want to make her as authentic as possible.
GBL: Latinas have made great strides on TV but there are still only a handful of us represented on the small screen. Do you feel the weight of that?
AG: Absolutely. I feel a big responsibility to represent what it means to be a Latina to a global audience. I'll never forget when a group of young girls [Latinas] came up to me and said, 'Oh my God, we love Veronica on the George Lopez show! She's so funny and stylish, and we love that she's a Latina millionaire.' And I thought, Wow, the roles that I pick aren't just to pay rent but they're also to represent my community. It's bigger than me.
GBL: How would you describe your beauty M.O.?
AG: I tend to be eye-heavy and lip-light because I love to eat and so I want to keep my lips nude. Also, I think that a red lip is too high-maintenance. For my character, I think it'd be weird if she had a bright red lip. She's always drinking coffee, too. It's really water, by the way! Didi's look is very similar to my own.
GBL: Walk us through your daily skin care routine.
AG: Well, I swear by avocado. It's excellent for your hair and skin, so I eat one daily. I also love Thayers Original Witch Hazel Astringent, which I pick up at Whole Foods ($8, wholefoodsmarket.com). I use it after washing my face, and I even remove my makeup with it. I also get facials twice a year with the incredible Shani Darden, who I found through Jessica Alba. I trust Jessica—she's built an empire on her face.
GBL: Once your skin is in order, what do you do for makeup?
AG: I like to have that no-makeup makeup look. I use Embryolisse Lait-Creme Concentre ($16, target.com), then Cover FX Mattifying Primer ($38, sephora.com), followed by Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation ($62, giorgioarmanibeauty-usa.com)—in that order. And then throughout the day I get rid of any shine with blotting sheets. And from there, just a bit of Kiehl's lip balm and a Dior lip stain. That combo is really low-maintenance. Like I mentioned, I always want to be ready for any avocado action.
GBL: We know you're all about your eye makeup. What do you use?
AG: I love a really big eye look with lots of lashes. I use Armani Eyes to Kill ($32, giorgioarmanibeauty-usa.com). It's the only mascara I've found that makes lashes super full, lasts all day, and doesn't smudge. I also don't want my eyeliner to run, so I use Lise Watier Waterproof Eyeliner ($23, lisewatier.us) and neutral shadows from Laura Mercier ($25 each, lauramercier.com). And if I want a smoky eye, I'll use Givenchy Magic Khol Eyeliner Pencil in Coffee ($26, neimanmarcus.com).
GBL: What other products do you swear by?
AG: Blush is really important! I used to apply my blush really high on my face, and I've learned that it should go lower than you think. And Latinas tend to have high cheekbones, so if you go lower it actually looks better. I usually do Nars Blush in Gilda or Orgasm ($30 each, narscosmetics.com) if I'm feeling sassy.
GBL: You must have some hair advice for us. What's your typical routine?
AG: I wash my hair every third day. I think one of the worst, most drying things you can do is over-wash your hair. Your natural oils are really good. I learned that rinsing with cold water keeps it shiny and gets rid of any static.
GBL: Do you style it with hot tools a lot?
AG: I do, but to be honest, I've started to embrace my natural Latin wave. I used to always blow it out, and then I thought, You know what? People die for that kind of wave. So now I try to wash it, douse it with cold water, do a Kiehl's conditioning treatment and then let it air-dry. And once a week, I put olive oil in my hair. My hair loves it.
GBL: What do you do for exercise? You do some pretty cool martial arts moves on Rush Hour!
AG: I work out every day or at least I try to. I believe that exercise preserves youth more than anything else. Sometimes if I'm at home watching TV I do weight-lifting moves with cans during commercials. It really is that easy! Trust me, if you do that and throw in squats and a couple of push-ups during commercial breaks you will see a change in your body.
GBL: Will try that! Do you have any Latina idols?
AG: Oh, so many. Beauty to me is just about confidence, so there's Rita Moreno, who is so inspiring and talented. You think of her as beautiful but you don't think of her as high maintenance. And Jennifer Lopez. Her skin is incredible. She really puts the work in—she doesn't drink or smoke, and she works out all the time. Zoe Saldana, I love. I feel like Zoe is such a classy babe. She's like a Latina superhero. I so look up to her.
GBL: There seems to be a wonderful sisterhood amongst the new Latina actresses. I know that you're friends with Gina Rodriguez, Genesis Rodriguez and Natalie Martinez. How much do you love going on this career journey with them?
AG: We met for lunch the other day, and I realized that although we're all so different, they make me better. Natalie is so fearless. Genesis is this beautiful cover girl and Gina's so wickedly talented. We're actually trying to do something together.
GBL: Talk about a squad!
AG: I've already named our squad, too: The Beauty, The Brawn, The Brain, and The Wild Card.

review: kiehl's cilantro and orange extract pollutant defending masque.
{reviewed masque on right, $32 at kiehls.com} |
as part of my ongoing at home facial quest (see prior experiments here and here), i tried kiehl's cilantro and orange extract pollutant defending masque this past week.
things to know:
- this masque smells so edible - a tangy mix of cilantro, citrus, and mildly minty.
- it has an unusual, though not difficult, application method - the masque is to be applied after one's bedtime ritual (cleansing, moisturizing) and left on for 5 minutes, then tissued off to a leave a thin film behind overnight. rinse off the next day.
- it's meant to remove daily pollutants from skin, for a more vibrant and smoother finish. i was blown away by how much smoother it made my face -- after removing it i had the sensation that i was wearing primer, that's how much more even the texture of my face felt!

Review: Mantry Subscription Box for January 2016
This is the Mantry Box for January 2016 in its wooden crate. |
Here's the January 2016 Bacon Brunch products from the Mantry Box in full view. |
2. Sosu Sauces Srirachup (9 oz.)-----------------------------------------------------------$7.00
3. Marlo’s Bakeshop Chocolate Pumpkin Pie Biscotti (5 oz.)------------------------$4.99
4. Farm to Table Foods Organic Apple Raisin Oatmeal (16 oz.)--------------------$8.50
5. Hickoryworks Pure Brown Country Sharkbark Hickory Syrup (8 oz.)----------$20.00
6. Chuao Chocolatier Baconluxious Chocolate Bar (2.8 oz.)-------------------------$6.00
The Broadbent Maplewood Smoked Bacon was a real treat from the last time I bought turkey bacon when I cooked some with our scrambled eggs. You really can taste how that smokey process seems to get through to the meat. I also plan on using some to make a warming creamy chowder soon now that the snow is on the way.
I never tasted a srirachup before, but I now am a fan. Sosu Sauces Srirachup packed a lot more spicy, hot flavor than typical ketchup. I used some on my scrambled eggs and my fish sandwich so far and loved it.
The Marlo’s Bakeshop Chocolate Pumpkin Pie Biscotti was a great pumpkin-spiced and chocolate-chip dunking cookie with plenty of a chew to them and lasting power.
The Farm to Table Foods Organic Apple Raisin Oatmeal was a big hit at our house. I cook oatmeal (not in one of those microwave packets) nearly every day for breakfast, but never tried this organic brand that has rye, wheat, spelt, barley and flax in addition to the oats. This cooked cereal also has just a little apples and raisins, but the other grains seem to dominate. Nonetheless, it was still very good and possessed a different flavor than regular old-fashioned or quick oats.
The Hickoryworks Pure Brown Country Sharkbark Hickory Syrup surprised me. I assumed it would taste like a pure maple syrup, but how wrong I was. The two-person operated company uses a recipe that is hundreds of years old. Instead of making the syrup from the tree sap, Hickoryworks uses the bark of the shagbark tree to produce the most exotic syrup that I’ve ever tasted. It has sweetness, but it has so much more complexity to it with somewhat of a nutty, smoky flavor that is incredibly good on my homemade waffles.
The idea of bacon and chocolate together like the Chuao Chocolatier Baconluxious Chocolate Bar didn’t appeal to me to be honest. Yet, I had to be fair and give it a taste before I had any right to judge. Of all the crazy things, I discovered that the pairing was really tasty of sweet with an underlying bit of saltiness with texture.
The cost to subscribe for a monthly Mantry box usually is $75. However, they are running a sale and you can subscribe for $59 now. Do check out this gourmet food subscription box because it was a fabulous find. The price was well worth discovering these unknown artisan foods.

The Pom-Pom Nail Art Trend Will Give You a Warm and Fuzzy Feeling
We almost thought we had seen it all when it came to nail art. Furry fingertips had everyone buzzing post-NYFW, and sweater manicures were hot this Winter. Both fads were pretty unusual (albeit quite cute). But then Korean women - who are at the forefront of every beauty trend - introduced us to pom-pom nails.
It's exactly what it sounds like: fuzzy or furry pom-poms of any size are glued directly on to the nail's surface. Try a large one for an accent nail or cluster a few tiny ones on each talon for a plush, precious manicure.
While this trend doesn't seem particularly functional (what happens when the pom-pom gets wet?), it's definitely adorable and worth trying - at least for one night. Try using faux nails like Kiss 100 Full Cover Nails ($6) as the foundation for your manicure masterpiece. That way, you can remove your art at the end of the evening and save it to wear another time. Read on to see some cute examples of the style and get inspired!
The Many Bags of Gigi Hadid
I spent much of yesterday looking through archival photos of Gigi Hadid, and I came away with several conclusions, of which this is the most important: it’s not fair that anyone gets to look like Gigi Hadid.

Proof That Organic Dye Is a Healthier Way to Color Your Hair
Something has been bothering me about my hair dye. I'm very careful about my diet; I don't like artificial ingredients, and I generally shun anything known to contain preservatives.
But when it comes to my hair dye? I literally have no idea what chemicals are in that dye. I've been applying light blond hair dye to my roots - and therefore directly to my scalp - nearly every month since I was 18 years old. And that was a while ago.
My relationship with hair dye has been long and fairly uncomplicated. I was born with blond hair. At some point in my early childhood, things took a turn for the brunette. Someone with parental authority decided blond was the way to go; Sun-In was used to make me vaguely blond for years. As a teen, I transitioned to that staple of '90s New Jersey haircare - highlights. Once I got to college and had to pay for haircare myself, I started with boxed dye - or as I call it, "The Box." I never looked back.
Before: At Spoke and Weal with my line of demarcation.

But a few changes in my life promoted a wholesale reconsidering of my color routine. I'm getting older and want to be more careful about the toxins I consume or apply to my body. Moisturizer and makeup have also come under review.
It's worth noting that the Food and Drug Administration doesn't explicitly believe there to be a link between hair dye and poor health. But it's also worth noting that the FDA is prevented by law from investigating some of the ingredients in hair dye, so caveat emptor.
I'd long been intrigued by the idea of organic dye. I wasn't quite sure it would work for me - and can a dye without chemicals even work, anyway?
So I turned to expert colorist Christine Thompson of Spoke and Weal salon. A longtime organic dye user herself, Christine only uses Aveda organic dye with her customers. I was in good hands.
Christine had her work cut out for her. My roots were so long that she dubbed the new growth the "line of demarcation." She assessed the job and declared that a combination of bright blond highlights and more subtle brown lowlights would be the best course of action for my messy head of hair. She promised that her method would ensure that my dark roots looked as natural as possible as my hair grew out.
After: The results after using Aveda Organic Dye.

There are a number of reasons why Christine has been passionate about organic dye. Primarily, she says, the relatively gentle Aveda formulations are able to "achieve a beautiful, wide range of color" for blondes, brunettes, and redheads. The dye also lasts longer on the hair, because the ingredients are not as damaging to strands. Finally, Christine emphasized that, because Aveda's line does not contain petroleum-based chemicals, that the runoff into the water supply is much cleaner environmentally.
It seems Aveda's big step forward has been removing chemicals derived from petroleum from their products. Instead, the colors are rounded out with the addition of sunflower, jojoba, babassu, and castor oils. Aveda's formulations do not include parabens, a known endocrine disruptor.
This sounds like progress to me. I wish I didn't have to be a scientist to fully understand the list of ingredients in hair dye, and I can't say with complete certainty that even organic dyes are harmless products. But it seems, to me, that the Aveda formulations may be a step in the right direction for my lifestyle.
But even organic dye is designed to serve a very important purpose, so the question is: did it work?
I'm happy to report that my hair looked very blond, and I dare say even better than when I do it at home myself. I benefitted from having an expert tend to my color, but I could see that the product did make a difference, too. My hair didn't have the dry, verging on brittle texture that accompanies a round with "The Box." Christine was right, too; my roots blended in better than usual as my hair grew longer.
For me, using an organic dye like Aveda is a good step forward in trying to make my beauty routine as healthy as possible. I don't yet know what my long-term hair color plan will be. I will need to make a decision about dye or not dyeing, especially as more and more gray hairs crop up on my head. Returning to my natural color, however, is out of the question - for now. I still want to be blonde, but I want to be blonde in the safest way possible.

FOTD Featuring Mostly Burberry Makeup
This photo was taken with flash, trying to see if I could get the highlighter to show up more clearly. Obviously, I'm still doing this wrong. |
Midweek date night is a time for a silky top and skinny black jeans. Also: lots of highlighter because I wanted to show you the limited edition Burberry one in action. But as we've already asserted, I tend to use a very light hand with face products. I was also lazy when taking the photos and didn't set up the reflector. So what you see is more of a general glow, which I actually think is a good thing. Because of the new highlighter I decided to use Burberry products wherever possible. Fans of the brand know that there have been several changes to the product lineup. They've switched manufacturing facilities, tinkered with the formulas of some (all? most?) of the products, switched the color numbers, and discontinued several shades. Right now they seem to be in the middle of a major foundation upheaval. The stores seem out of everything, so I guess something new is coming. In any case, Sephora seems to have the most complete range of products, at least online, and to receive any new products first.
Face
Smashbox Oil Primer
Burberry Sheer Luminous Foundation 05 Trench applied with Artis Oval 08
Bobbi Brown Intensive Skin Serum Concealer Beige #6 under the eyes. The texture is very silicony and I think it was made mostly for those who do the huge concealer triangle under the eyes. It takes a few minutes to set.
Other unsightlies were covered with Cle de Peau stick concealer in Almond.
Shiseido Translucent Loose Powder
Eyes
Urban Decay Anti-aging eye primer
Burberry Eye Colour Cream in Mink 102 all over the lid and blended outward and upward.
Burberry Sheer Eye Shadows:
- Porcelain under the brow bone
- Taupe Brown in the crease (blend for your life)
- Midnight Brown in the middle of the lid
Bobbi Brown Smoky Eye Mascara (both Bobbi Brown products I used were samples that came with a Sephora GWP).
Brows
Anastasia Beverly Hills Eye Definer in Medium Brown
Cheeks
Burberry Light Glow Natural Blush 05 Blossom
Burberry Nude Gold Highlighter Spring/Summer 2016 Runway Palette
Lips
Burberry Lip Mist in 205 Rosy Red (discontinued. Use instead one of the new Burberry Kisses lipsticks, Pomegranate Pink #41 looks pretty similar). I pushed the color into the lips with a brush in tow coats for better longevity through dinner.
Rimmel 1000 Kisses lip liner in Indian Pink 004, a color that seems to work with many reddish lipsticks, probably because of my natural dark lip color. It's very forgiving.
Finishing Touches
What's left of my old Burberry Sheer Summer Glow from summer 2012 applied lightly with the large and fluffy Hakuhodo Kokutan finishing brush. Your favorite Guerlain Meteorites would work just as well.
