Perfumer Danielle Ryan Shares the Unexpected Scents That'll Get You Out of Your Fragrance Rut
Ready to do something new with your look? All month long we're asking our 25 favorite influencers to share their 25 best beauty ideas for spring. Look out for the 25x25 logo here on Lipstick and on our social channels—@get_lipstick on Instagram and @glamourmag on Snapchat—for exclusive tips, tricks, and tutorials. Up next: unconventional fragrances. Read on!
We're all guilty of getting stuck on the same fragrances over and over, whether it's sweet vanilla or sexy musk. But new season, new scent! Just in time for the weather to warm up, we turned to Danielle Ryan, founder of the fashion-favorite Dublin creative agency Roads, who uses unexpected notes (like pineapple) in her addictive fragrances to help shake us out of our perfume rut. Below, Ryan lets us in on her creative process and the freshest batch of perfumes you need to add to your vanity. Believe us, if we could make this scratch-n-sniff for you, we would.
Lipstick: How did you come across pineapple as a potential ingredient? Why is it cool and different?
Danielle Ryan: The fragrance I used pineapple in was Roads I Am Dance, $155, from our recently released African collection [above]. The collection started with themes of contemporary Africa, and I am Dance was based specifically on a street dance called Pantsula that began in South Africa. It's a really fast, fun, colorful dance, and I wanted to find an energetic and cool ingredient to marry with the original theme. We used pineapple in the middle notes and then introduced amber and cedarwood as base notes. The pineapple smooths out the fragrance, making it more sophisticated. You can smell the pineapple but it becomes an interesting note in a harmony with the other ingredients rather than overpowering.
Different ingredients are fantastic to wear as they are not always identifiable and can be so chic and different. I like playing with lots of different notes that aren't commonly used. It makes for a fragrance that, if created carefully, can stand out and be quite the showstopper. Fragrance, like fashion, can be about making statements and communicating them in a confident way.
Lipstick: Are there other ingredients you're excited about right now?
DR: I like the idea of ginger generally. I like ingredients that are associated with renewal and freshness. Fragrance can be very sociological, but I feel if you make the association with the ingredient and what it stands for, it will make you feel a particular way. I'm also into making my own scrubs. I mix one cup of sea salt, one-half cup of coconut or almond oil, a few drops of essential oil, grated ginger, and lime. I make it fresh for each use.
Lipstick: How do you approach fragrance for yourself?
DR: I'm very playful with my fragrances. I have a wardrobe of fragrances as diverse as my clothes. I wear different fragrances for different moods, weather, occasions, times of year, etc. I often wear a different fragrance in the day and then change for the evening. During the day I tend to wear something fresh, light, and sharp, and during the evening I get very experimental, opting for heavier fragrances, like tea, musks, heavy florals, ouds, Bourbon. Maybe something with a mix of nutmeg and woods.
I try to spray on a fragrance every few hours to keep it fresh. I also always spray perfume before I go to sleep. It's not commonly done but I can't see why not. Something soft can be beautiful to cozy up with. An enjoyment of a fragrance should be for yourself as much as it is for everyone else. I always apply my perfume once I've dried after a shower when my body is warm. This allows the scent to mediate more. If it's still cold out the scent can get lost under clothes, so I like to spray my clothes, a scarf, and my hair. Don't be shy about it, wear your scent with attitude.
Lipstick: Are there other scent notes that you think are also in need of a modern reboot?
DR: I think there are plenty, found everywhere. I like peach and some rough herb scents, like thyme or rosemary at the moment.

Kourtney Kardashian Sports a Grungy Beauty Look in a New Photoshoot
Kourtney Kadashian tried out a whole new beauty look in a recent photoshoot—and we're digging the grungy vibe.
The eldest Kardashian sister took to Instagram Saturday with a snap to tease the latest shoot featured on her app. In the photos, which were taken by photographer Brendan Forbes, the mama-of-three dons only a tattered T-shirt, heavy charcoal-rimmed eyes and vampy wine-red lips that could almost be mistaken for black.
Along with the sultry new pics, Kourtney included an explanation for her gone-grunge beauty look: "I love how my dark lipstick contrasted with the stark white of my T-shirt that we stretched the holes of to make a little extra grungy."
The star also reveals that the shoot was held in her under-construction home movie theater—hence the bare-bones, cement-laden setting.
What do you think about Kourtney's utlra-vampy makeup?

Review: Love Goodly Vegan Lifestyle Subscription Box for February/March 2016
Love Goodly Vegan Lifestyle Subscription Box for February/March 2016 |
How a Love Goodly subscription works is that you get a wonderful mix of five to seven vegan products such as beauty, food, jewelry, cosmetics as well as health or home related that always will be worth $85 or more per box. You also get a card with details on each product along with its value. On the other side, you also get a yummy vegan recipe as an added bonus. The cost is $39.95 for each box that includes free shipping with a portion going to one of the company’s charity partners, Farm Sanctuary and Cure Cervical Cancer.
Not only is this bimonthly vegan box a great way to familiarize yourself with new vegan brands, but it is also an easier way to shop, especially when you’re gradually easing yourself into a vegan lifestyle. In fact, those products that you love will be ones that can be easily reordered in Love Goodly’s online shop while you also are rewarded with eco-points when purchasing.
I really thought this box had a nice variety. Let me show you below of what you might expect.
Love Goodly February/March 2016 unboxed |
1. Purely Elizabeth Apple Currant Muesli--------------------------------------------------$6.00
2. skinnyskinny Basil & Mint Soap---------------------------------------------------------$12.00
3. Cellar Door Tahitian Grapefruit Vanilla Travel Tin-----------------------------------$10.00
4. LVX & LOVEGOODLY True Love Red Vegan Nail Polish-------------------------$18.00
5. May Yeung Infinity Bracelet ---------------------------------------------------------------$40.00
The Purely Elizabeth Apple Currant Muesli has apple pieces, currants, oats, quinoa, chia and hemp. Each sugar free serving of this muesli has five grams of protein and three grams of fiber. Though you can eat it as a cereal, I preferred eating mine with my Greek yogurt for some extra delicious crunch.
The skinnyskinny Basil & Mint Soap was so luxurious in how it lathered and moisturized the skin with it amazing smelling blends of essential oils and botanicals in its extra-virgin olive oil base.
The Cellar Door Tahitian Grapefruit Vanilla Travel Tin also had a beautiful delicious fragrance once I opened that lid of that pure vegan candle. I wish the company came out with a perfume or sachet of that same scent to prolong that pretty smell.
The LVX & LOVEGOODLY True Red Vegan Nail Polish is a result of the two companies working together. This product has a gel-like formula and is free of seven toxins. This is a classic red that you can never get tired of regardless of the time of year. I just love it!
Finally, I got the May Yeung Infinity Bracelet. This black adjustable, twine-like bracelet has sterling silver beads and an eternity charm with a value placed on it of $40.00. The symbol represents life, love and nature. Though it is a charming, little bracelet, I do think the valued price was a bit steep.

Zendaya's Retro Beauty Look at the 2016 Kids' Choice Awards Is More Modern Than You Think
If you're in need of some fresh hair inspo, look no further than Zendaya, who consistently keeps her hairstyles fresh on the red carpet—we're talking anything from cropped pixie wigs to chic, gleaming cornrows.
At the 2016 Kids' Choice Awards last night, the actress debuted another new hair look that might be one of our favorites from her yet: a sleek, pinned faux bob with face-framing tendrils. Her makeup featured bold brows (a constant on this year's spring and fall runways), peachy eyeshadow, and muted pink lips showing just a hint of glimmer. The look proves that something harkening back to Old Hollywood can be just as fresh and modern as, say, glow-in-the-dark eyeshadow.
The star paired her modern retro beauty look with an on-trend black choker (also a feature in the fall 2016 shows), a flapper-style couture dress by designer Ulyana Sergeenko, and bejeweled black platforms that were anything but basic.
All in all, we're filing this look away in our beauty inspiration drawer.

Ariel Winter Channels The Little Mermaid With New Red Hair
Looks like Ariel Winter is springing forward into the new season with fiery red locks: The Modern Family star took to Instagram on Friday with a teaser photo of the new coppery shade (a dramatic change from her signature raven hair) and then gave us a better look at the style yesterday when she posted a fresh-faced selfie.
According to People StyleWatch, the new hairstyle could very well be a wig—but if this is Ariel's trial for red hair, we think the hue passed with flying colors.
