If you have trouble getting a topknot to look right—it's always teetering, or too flat, or too sticky-outy—here's a trick to try. You'll be looking very Katie Holmes around-town-effortless-chic in no time.

1. Flip your head upside down, and use your hands to gather your hair into a high pony. (Don't use a brush—embrace some bumps and imperfections for a sexy, messy look.)

2. Wrap your hair elastic around once or twice, but on the last time around, don't pull your pontyail all the way through. Instead, leave a little loop of hair up at the top.

3. Twist the remaining hair in your ponytail (not too tightly), then loosely wrap around the base of the loop once or twice. Pin in place.

Let any loose wisps and frizzies roam free—they're a pretty part of the relaxed look! The trick to getting this sort of casual topknot to look cool is to resist the urge to overthink/overwork it.

But, of course, there are lots of ways to make a topknot—some people like to divide their ponytail into two sections and literally knot them once or twice before winding the ends around. Others twist the two sections around one another before making the bun. Next time you're bored, take a few minutes to play and see what works best for your hair texture and length!

So what's your go-to topknot technique? Do you do your knot differently on rushed days vs. occasions when you have more time to primp?
