Beauty Mistakes to Avoid Before Meeting the Parents For the First Time

$

Not to toot my own horn, but I have mastered the art of meeting the parents. You see, I grew up an only child, surrounded by adults. I only spent time with other children at school and thus quickly learned how to schmooze (and win over) even the most disapproving and austere of uncles, family friends, and teachers.

Little did I know that this life skill would serve me well once I entered the dating scene. Armed with a charming smile covered in a mother-approved shade of mauve (Bobbi Brown's Creamy Lip Color in Italian Rose, if you're curious), I survived - nay, conquered - the third degree. A few moms ended up liking me more than their sons did, as they kept in touch long after the relationship had ended. But being a conversationalist is not crucial to being a pro with parents. It's all about looking the part.

I understand why you might be nervous about this big meeting - it could potentially make or break your partnership - but there's no need to stress. Above all, you need to remember that confidence is key. An aggressive mom can sniff out weakness like a shark can sense blood. And we all know that an essential component of courage is style. Once you've picked out the perfect outfit to meet the family, it's time to select the ideal beauty products for the occasion. Not sure whether nail art is appropriate? Nervous they won't like your signature scent? I've got you covered. I guarantee that, if you follow these tips, your honey's parents will find you as enchanting, pretty, and wonderful as he or she does!

  • Focus on your best features. Maybe you have gorgeously glossy, thick hair that your significant other obsesses over. Perhaps batting your enormous eyelashes is what lured him in. Regardless of what your most alluring asset is, you should accentuate it with tasteful styling products and makeup. Not sure where to start? If you've got kinky strands, learn how to preserve the pattern of your beguiling curls to make sure they look their best. Play up your luscious lips with tips on how to pick the right lipstick for your skin tone. Make those brown eyes look even more incredible with shadow tutorials designed to make them pop. Like I said, confidence is key, and drawing attention to your favorite feature will make you stand taller and prouder. Parents notice that kind of poise!
  • Do not test trends. If you've never rocked colored eyeliner, contoured your cheekbones, or tried strobing, tonight is not the time. Stick to what you know, even if that's just a bit of bronzer [I'm addicted to Tarte Amazonian Clay Bronzer in Park Ave Princess ($30)], mascara, and a bit of fancy lip balm. That said, some moms can be enchanted by nail art. Try a more understated design like these sweet doilies or a classic french manicure. Know your audience.
  • Get a good night's rest the night before. I'm all for fun nights out, but you want to get your beauty sleep before meeting the parents. Your skin will look brighter and clearer, and any fine lines will look less pronounced when you've caught up on zzz's. Try an overnight mask to really wake up with a refreshed glow! But if you still wake up looking sallow, try a color-correcting concealer to add luminosity to your complexion and hide dark circles.
  • Wear mascara. Even if mascara isn't part of your regular routine, slick some on (try a dark brown if black seems too intense). Mascara will open up your eyes and make them sparkle - perfect for long conversations with lots of eye contact. But don't go overboard: there's no need to apply falsies. It's important to curl your lashes before applying any mascara. This step will make your peepers look extra large. If you have stubbornly straight lashes, heat your curler with a blow dryer first. This will act like a hot tool for your lids and hold the curl longer. Once your device is warm to the touch (not too hot - you don't want to burn yourself!), position it at the base of your lashes, squeeze for five seconds, and release. Then brush on a mascara that will give you a doe-eyed look [try Lancome Hypnose Doll Lashes Mascara ($28)]. Use a metal lash comb like Tweezerman's ($12) for a clump-free, defined fringe.
  • Accentuate your cheeks with blush. No matter your skin tone, blush will liven up your complexion, making you look healthy and radiant . . . even if your nerves are making you look pale and feel nauseous.
  • Don't spritz on too much perfume. As lovely as your favorite tuberose- and vanilla-packed fragrance is, stow it away for another occasion. You don't want to trigger your future in-laws' allergies! Try wearing Kai's lightly scented body lotion ($38) or a subtle, fresh-smelling hair spray like Ouai Soft Hairspray ($26) if you can't leave the house without splashing on a scent.
  • Book a blowout. Nothing puts a spring in my step like stepping onto the street sporting shiny, stylish strands. Family is sure to notice - after all, many moms and grandmas admire the flawless mane of Kate Middleton! But consider scheduling your appointment for the evening before - otherwise, you could risk being late if the salon is backed up. If you're concerned it won't look as sleek the next day, try these blowout-restoring tips.
  • Brush and floss your teeth. Oral hygiene is always important, but foul breath will make far more of a bad impression than smudged eyeliner ever could. Tote this tiny breath spray from Hello! ($4) in your purse to mint up your mouth on the sly.
  • Wear setting spray. One of my biggest beauty pet peeves is going in for a hug, then finding out my family member left foundation all over my clothing. While moms are big offenders of this sin, be the bigger person and do what you can to prevent smudgy mishaps. Setting spray will not only keep your makeup from rubbing off, but will help your look last longer. I'm a big fan of Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray ($30).
  • Be true to yourself. If your everyday look is more Dita Von Teese than Betty Draper, then by all means, pop on your go-to red lip and cat eye. Nothing will make you feel more confident than your signature style.

review: bath and body works eucalyptus mint 3-wick candle.

{$22.50 at bathandbodyworks.com}

because i love candles i try to invest in a variety of price points (with the exception being the dollar store variety - that is just never a good option).   since i can go through a few candles a month if i'm in the mood, i like to have a mix of fancy/bespoke candles and some options from places like bath and body works or yankee candle but with carefully selected scents that still feel custom and luxurious.

i was drawn to bath and body works eucalyptus mint 3-wick candle even before testing it because i loved the idea of crisp refreshing scent for spring rather than another floral.

within minutes of lighting the wicks i realized it smelled exactly like something.  i couldn't help but get a happy, relaxed smile on my face as it burned.  finally i realized the scent reminded me of the beautiful boutique hotel  -the international house- in new orleans, where my friends and i stayed for my bachelorette exactly 3 years ago.  it brings back happy memories for me of three long days wandering lazily around the french quarter with six of my favorite friends in the world.  this candle offered the perfect instant pick me up, especially for these early spring days in the north that are just a touch colder than i'd like.

not only does this candle smell beautiful, distinct, and serene, it also has good staying power -- days after burning it for a couple of hour it's gorgeous scent still hung around my dining room.

Just when it starts to get warmer, my skin tends to dry. I know it is almost spring; the season when you enjoy cool weather, pretty nature, and adventures. Little Monsters, Lady Gaga's Bold Beauty Style Is Back!

I have been a fan of Lady Gaga since she released "Just Dance" in 2008. From that first single, it was clear to me that she was more than just your run-of-the-mill pop star: Lady Gaga is a true talent. She writes her own music and plays piano like a virtuoso. She has serious vocal chops that I envy (and I graduated with an opera degree!). Not only are the range and power of her voice phenomenal, but she also has the breath control to dance to choreographed moves while singing live . . . for several consecutive hours during her concerts. This is no small feat.

But I didn't join Gaga's legion of Little Monsters because of her credibility as a musician. It was her willingness to aggressively experiment with beauty. Her ever-changing wigs, wild nail art, and boundary-pushing makeup inspired me to take risks with my own look. In fact, during my senior year of college, I visited a beauty supply store, purchased a weft of hair extensions that matched my own strands, and wove it into a bow so I could channel her for Halloween.

Something changed, however, as Gaga began working on Artpop. Her edgy beauty looks didn't hit the same high notes that they once had, and it seemed like she hit a style slump. But after the release of her highly successful duet album with Tony Bennett, Cheek to Cheek, little glimpses of the dramatic Gaga I fell in love with started to resurface. Glitter shadow, lace-front wigs, and long talons returned to her beauty routine.

After seeing her empowering performance at the 2016 Oscars, I can say that Lady Gaga is living - and seems to be loving - through a beauty renaissance. I think she has always been secure in her talent, but it feels like now she is truly confident in who she is, through and through. As her fans grow up with her, self-acceptance is an important lesson for them to learn.

A strong self-esteem shines brightly through any beauty style, but when it comes to Gaga, confidence makes her daring looks even more dynamic. Read on for photo evidence and to get tips on how to DIY Gaga's greatest hair and makeup creations.

Baby-Powder Addicts Will Love These Talc-Free Alternatives

Talcum powder has been making headlines lately, but it's not a new ingredient. It's been used for centuries and can be found in a slew of consumer products, from dry shampoo and blush to baby powder. But what is talc, exactly? It's a mineral that is made up of silicon, oxygen, and magnesium and is meant to absorb moisture (therefore preventing rashes). In its natural state, talc can contain asbestos, which is a known carcinogen - but according to the American Cancer Society, commercial products containing talc have been asbestos-free since the 1970s.

However, the controversial ingredient has been linked to cancer when it comes to feminine hygiene. Though findings have been mixed, some studies report that women who use talcum powder in the genital area could be at a higher risk for ovarian cancer. It is said that powder can travel through the vagina into the ovary, but none of the findings have been concrete.

Remember: it's always best to talk to your doctor about any concerns you have regarding products you use on your body. However, if you're looking to avoid talc but still want to sprinkle on something to absorb extra moisture, we've got you covered! Read on to shop talc-free body powders.

This Iconic Fashion Editor Is Getting Into the Fragrance Game

Since stepping down as the creative director of Vogue, Grace Coddington has been keeping busy. In addition to releasing two books, she's joining the beauty industry! The legendary editor is partnering with fashion house Comme des Garcons on a new fragrance, Grace by Grace Coddington.

Though we have yet to snag a sniff, there's one thing about the perfume that stands out to us immediately: the bottle. Fans of the iconic redhead know that she has a long-standing cat obsession, and she's immortalized the feline figure into this elegant flacon. In fact, that cat-eared cap is inspired by one of her own sketches.

According to Vogue, the juice is loaded with timeless notes like peach blossom and white musk, but the heart of the scent is amber crystal–spiked Moroccan rose. "My mother had a rose garden, and it just never occurred to me to smell like any other smell except rose," Coddington told Vogue.

Whether Coddington is your idol or you're a bona fide cat-lover, this scent is worth stashing in your collection. Snap it up when it hits counters on April 19!

One Woman Tried on All 97 of Her Lipsticks and the Results Are Fascinating

For ladies who love makeup, there's nothing more exciting than an arm full of lipstick swatches, unless it happens to be an astounding 97 lipstick swatches, all giving a perfect view of each color's true shade (swoon). One beauty-obsessed Reddit user, who goes by the username of "itselyse," provided the Makeup Addiction community with that exact scenario when she decided to put on every single lipstick she owned.

After applying all 97 of her lipsticks, the lipstick junkie photographed each outcome, showing exactly how the shade would appear on anyone of a similar skin tone. The idea to do so came after swatched her entire lipstick collection, and a reader suggested she photograph them on her lips as well.

Although this display is clearly cool to look at, there's more to learn from it besides which colors are most flattering. When all was said and done, it turned out this beauty junkie's favorite lipsticks tended to be drugstore brands, specifically Rimmel London. She also provided readers with a tip for how to take off all the highly pigmented lip stains: "Wipe it [lipstick] off with a baby wipe. If the baby wipe is not enough (like with liquid lipsticks), go in with a cotton round soaked in olive oil to break off the product," she explained.

Take a look at her swatches, and prepare to be mesmerized:

He Won't Stop Cheating? Yes, It Is Your Fault!

$
0
0
I know that sounds harsh to blame you for the heartache that has been inflicted upon you by your lover, but it's the truth! 2016-02-29-1456769269-1635809-infidelity1.jpgSometimes the truth is hard to embrace, but if your partner is a perpetual cheater, you must embrace the blame. It is not as if you lined women up in front of him and forced him to choose, but you are at fault because you have not taught him that cheating is unacceptable. You see, the most important lesson you can ever teach your lover is how to treat you!

You teach people in general and your lover specifically how to treat you by what you allow, accept, tolerate, communicate and demand. By not teaching these lessons effectively, you set yourself up for heartbreak and disrespect. Therefore, you have to accept your role as the teacher and realize that you are responsible to set the parameters for what is acceptable and preferred treatment by your partner. When bad behavior first presents itself in a relationship, it is up to you to address it, correct it, embrace it or leave the relationship.

2016-02-29-1456769542-172400-lies.jpgHoping that he will change is always a bad strategy. You do not give anyone multiple opportunities to hurt you. If you have allowed and accepted cheating or any bad behavior from your partner for six months, six years or sixteen years, and then decide after all of that time that you want it to change, IT'S YOUR FAULT. The first time it is shame on your partner; the second, third or fourth time it is shame on you. I know he promises it won't happen again or that it didn't mean anything, but how many times does he have to lie to you before you figure out he is a liar and can't be trusted with your heart?

By accepting cheating or any bad behavior, you teach your partner that hurting you and keeping you in pain is acceptable. The time to correct bad behavior is IMMEDIATELY. away. 2016-02-29-1456769982-8538044-stop.jpgYou have to set the standard and establish the consequences for cheating, or you can simply put a bandage on it and wait for the next time. When you see the first glimmer of a potentially negative behavior, ask yourself if you can live with it for the next forty years. If you cannot live with it, you have three choices: correct it, train yourself to live with it or walk To stay, pray and hope it will change after the pattern is embedded is INSANE.

It's like raising a child - when that child exhibits behavior that is not positive, you lovingly correct them, teach them the right way and set some consequences in place that will teach the child that their behavior will not be tolerated. 2016-02-29-1456770192-3580676-childintimeout.jpgYou reinforce the lesson until it is learned and if they resist the lessons, you reinforce the consequence. You don't wait until your child is thirteen or fourteen to try to correct bad behavior that should have been corrected when they were two. By the time they are teenagers, the behavior is embedded and will be almost impossible to change.

Accept the responsibility of the teacher and decide how you want to be treated. You decide what is acceptable and what is not. Any behavior that does not coincide with how you want to be treated needs to be examined, addressed and rectified.

2016-02-29-1456772535-2470883-stopnow.png
Stop blaming him and instead look at all the ways that you have taught him that it was okay. By your actions you taught him that you would be mad or sad for a while, but it was okay - you would get over it and he could continue to be disrespectful and hurtful because you would accept it. Sure you would be angry and maybe even turn your negative attention toward the other woman, believing that she was the problem instead of him or you, even though he is the one who you are in a relationship with and the one that needs to be instructed on how to treat you. I am always amazed at the men some women fight to hold on to and what they will endure to keep them. It is as if they crave the pain and cannot let go; even though they are embarrassed, hurting, minimized, and disrespected, they remain in the relationship too afraid to stop their own pain.

It is extremely important for you to look very carefully at your actions and how those actions signal to others how to treat you. If you neglect yourself, others will neglect you.2016-02-29-1456770507-761958-teachertip.jpg If you don't make you a priority in your own life, then no one else will make you a priority in theirs. Demand to be treated well and treat others well; set the standard and advocate for yourself. Start by acknowledging your truth and learning to love what you see in the mirror and not comparing yourself to some ideal of beauty that the magazines tell you is worthy of love. Regardless of what some partners may tell you, someone else will want you, and regardless of what your background and life experiences may have taught you, you are worthy of love, support and respect. You are a one-in-a-trillion miracle, unique in all your ways, and you deserve to be treated with the dignity and respect due a rare jewel.

Set a new agenda and demand to be supported and appreciated as a part of the relationship foundation. Set the standard for what you will and will not accept. Let your partner know that you have no tolerance for cheating and make it clear what the consequences are if he does. Don't be so desperate that you will take anything and everything. If you plan to be minimized, neglected, and starved for attention and affection, then accept that kind of treatment from the beginning and train your partner from the start that you will accept being treated poorly and taken for granted.
2016-02-29-1456772392-4781645-teacherswanted.jpg
If you recognize your value, you can teach others to recognize your value as well. It starts by knowing you, knowing what you need to be happy and how to communicate it to your partner. You are your lover's first teacher - a person interested in you watches you, sees how you treat yourself and allow others to treat you. He gathers the information, takes copious notes and then gages his actions and responses accordingly. Create a new normal for your life. Start off being completely you and treating yourself well. If you start a new relationship off by not speaking the truth, giving everything and expecting nothing, then most likely that is the way it will end.

It's time to establish new relationship habits that will nourish you. Habits that you can live with and rely on for the next twenty, thirty or forty years. Carefully craft your lessons and teach your partner what you expect, what will be a deal breaker and most importantly how to love you in a way that is meaningful to you.

When it comes to relationships, choosing whether to go or to stay is a hard decision for most. The decision is coupled with love and pain and is agonizingly difficult to make. Each person must do what is best for them, regardless of the opinions of the people around them. The decisions that you have to make are yours and yours alone and so is the blame, fault and the resolution.

If you are tired of hurting and want a different type of relationship, visit www.JaniceMoss.com for books, articles, blogs and resources that can help you stop hurting.

Until then, love yourself totally and completely.
