Middle School Teacher Challenges Nation to Make March Month of Mindful Communication

Los Angeles middle school teacher Heather Shotke is fed up with all the LOLs, OMGs, and IDKs appearing in her students' formal essays, so much so that she has banned such acronyms in her classroom. And she is daring America to join her.

A veteran teacher with a master's degree in education and a communication degree from USC, Shotke has become increasingly disturbed by "text lingo" migrating from her students' smartphones into their papers.

Slang and abbreviations have become "the unapproved norm in the classroom," says Shotke, "blurring the lines between formal and informal communication." To draw attention to the issue, she has launched a 31-day grammar and mindfulness challenge. For the month of March, all who accept may only write in proper grammar, type out full sentences and use entire words in their school work, formal writing and, in what is sure to be the most vexing aspect of the contest for teens, in text messages and Snapchats. In a bit of irony, Shotke has even given the challenge its own easy-to-text moniker: gramMARCH.

What follows is my lightly edited conversation with Shotke on her passion for teaching, what led her to launch gramMARCH and why she believes we should all take a step back to "pause, ponder and prose."

MG: You've been a middle school teacher for over a decade. What is it about this age group that keeps you coming back?
HS: Middle school is an age group that you love or you hate, and I love it. I think it's that you're still able to reach them. They're not too cool for school yet. They think they're grown, but at the same time you can still connect and make a difference.

MG: Breaking through to a middle schooler seems like it could be tough. How do you reach them?
HS: As a teacher, you're always trying to relate to these kids. You kind of have to play this game where you're an authoritative figure, but you have to still be relevant and cool. So, you know, you have to stay in touch with the music and the fashion but at the same time you're helping to mold them so that they're successful in society by, for example, knowing when to use informal versus formal language.

2016-02-29-1456760812-7788066-FullSizeRender.jpg

MG: What do you mean by "informal" versus "formal" language?
HS: I've been teaching 14 years now, so I've seen the evolution of technology in the classroom. At first more and more kids started getting cell phones. Then they were getting smart phones. And at the same time that this technology started becoming so readily available, I started seeing for the first time that my students would draw a little happy face :) in their writing. Or, they'd write "OMG" next to a sentence that they really wanted me to notice. Or put an "LOL" when they were trying to be funny. At first, I thought, "This will pass. I'll just mark it up with red. Talk to them about it." But over time, I saw it happening more and more and more. As a teacher, I was thinking, "What am I doing wrong? They're not listening to me."

MG: Were other teachers seeing the "OMGs" and "LOLs" in formal writing assignments, too?
HS: They were; and I even spoke to some some admission advisors at Cal State and USC who said they were seeing this text lingo in admission essays! That blew me away. I see students working so hard on their admissions essays, and you would think that they would take the time to write out "you" rather than "U," or type out "easy," rather than "EZ." But these people said it was becoming more and more prominent.

2016-02-29-1456761311-456832-IMG_0916.JPG

MG: Avoiding shorthand in a college essay probably seems like common sense to a lot of adults, but I guess we forget that we weren't texting when we were in middle school. It would be confusing to know which "language" to use if you'd never been taught.
HS: Exactly. We teachers didn't grow up with a phone in our hands. They have! That's what they're familiar with, so it's tricky for them to know when to switch and go back and forth between the two. We have a "no cell phone" policy during the school day, but I swear their hands are in their pockets all day making sure it's there, even though they can't even bring it out. Now the thing is SnapChat. They're on it 24/7. For me, technology has become a gift and a curse. Although it has made the world a much smaller place, it's led to brevity and this constant shorthand. It can really diminish quality writing.

2016-02-29-1456757686-3748982-gramMarchwithhands.jpg

MG: So you decided to get creative and do something about it...
HS: Yes, in 2014 I decided to try to meet my students where they were at: on their phones, in their texts, on their social feeds, and in their games. I started something called the gramMARCH Challenge. The idea is that for the entire month of March, everyone is expected write in proper grammar, in full sentences and use entire words no matter the medium. No emojis. No text lingo. All correct punctuation for the entire month, whether writing on Instagram or an English paper.

MG: In your ideal world, would text lingo and emoticons be banned forever?
HS: No, I don't want to come across as this grammar grandma. The gramMARCH Challenge is about awareness and mindfulness. There is a time and place for everything. I have no problem with the text lingo. It's just a matter of being aware of audience and knowing when to differentiate whether it's appropriate or not.

2016-02-29-1456759844-4536842-gramMarch.jpg

MG: How did your students first respond to the idea of the gramMARCH Challenge?
HS: The way I presented it to my class was: "I really don't know if you can do it?" They were definitely intrigued, and said: "Ok, we'll accept that challenge." Each day had a different theme. For example, we have a Simile Day, a Rhyme Day, a Hyperbole Day, an Irony Day. At first I got questions from other teachers, like: "How are you going to monitor if students are sticking to the rules?" But the kids got really into it and monitored themselves! They are always checking each other on it. Then my kids started challenging their cousins at other schools to join in too. We started handing out stickers and working together to brand the idea. We created a website and started an Instagram account, and it took off from there.

2016-02-29-1456759352-6145131-PhotoChallegenGrammarch.jpg

MG: Who can join the 2016 gramMARCH Challenge?
HS: Anyone! It's for adults, families, and classrooms everywhere. Everyone wants to get information out so quickly, we don't always pause for just a moment to think what impression the information might be making on others. Through gramMARCH, we are challenging America to slow down and be more mindful with language, so that thoughts and words are given respect.

The Sap Is Running

2016-02-29-1456770661-5675681-IMG_1590.JPG

Plink, plink is the sound of sap running in the metal buckets that hang from the maple trees in the wooded area of my property. This yearly ritual is always a test for me. Should I even bother? Is it even worth it? Forty gallons of sap for one gallon of maple syrup does not even remotely capture the amount of labor required to produce the alchemic wonder we drizzle on granola, pancakes and ice cream. And yet, since the divorce, I have used this first harvest of the season as a gauge for my continuing pursuit of this country life.

This is the job at hand. Tap the trees. During my married years we tapped 30 trees. To boil the sap down requires starting an outdoor fire, sometimes on a very windy day. Feed the fire all day. Bring the partially boiled sap inside to catch that moment when it is syrup. Bottle. This occurs over a 3-4 week period until, the trees heal up, the sap stops running, we have enough.

The first year after my divorce I gathered my tools: a hand drill, the spiles, a hammer, the buckets, my snowshoes. I trod through the woods on a bitter cold day in February. I drilled holes into the trees following, I thought, the instructions I found in a country living book. This was my husband's job, made easier with a power drill. He took the drill with him. I was steeped in the memories of the abundance the two us created together. There was the time we shared homebrews as we fed the fire, after the kids were in bed. Now it was just me and I have laundry to do. I overheard neighbors at the general store talking about the gallons of sap collected. My trees were not giving up much that year. In the end I think I boiled down a gallon. I had not tapped my trees correctly. They piddled sap when they should have dripped a least a gallon a day.

The following year, I tapped five trees. One Sunday, more out of obligation that actual desire, I once again trod through the woods. I could not get my hand drill to work correctly. It all felt like such an effort. Too much effort, for the meager end result I was expecting. I am a busy single mother working long hours. Just keeping track of the temperature; freezing nights, warm days over 32, seemed like an added detail my hectic life could not keep account of. Besides, I could buy maple syrup at the store if I really wanted it.

Something has shifted. Maybe it is the passage time, maybe it is a better understanding of my limits, maybe there is a map of how I want to live my life and a pathway to arrive there. This year I am feeling optimistic. Once again I have been to the woods with my hand drill. I have tapped 30 trees and while the sap is not running abundantly, that is more as a result of the weather, than my skill. On the day I tapped the sap was dripping liberally into my buckets. By the end of this week I will have enough sap to boil down to make a gallon. By the end of March, if my effort is sustained, I will have 2-3 gallons of syrup put by. Meanwhile, I am making plans to bring sheep back to my land. I have planted onion seeds in little cups, to be transplanted later in the spring. My apple orchard will have a long overdue pruning.

Divorce is one of those big disruptions of life that make you question many already settled answers. In my thirties I had this dream of living in the country, growing my own food, and simplifying life. I met a man who wanted all those things as well. We had a child. We were living our dream. Until we weren't. If divorce were a simple legal procedure, like, say, paying a parking ticket, perhaps there wouldn't be pages of major websites devoted to the actual process we need to go through to heal from it. A mark of our healing, of being present in the new life we have created, is perhaps to not avoid thinking about the past, but to acknowledge our journey from our past to our present and find it sweeter

"Impossible is not a fact, it's an attitude."

Close your eyes. Now picture a friendly, calming, avuncular drill sergeant. With natty eye glasses. Loves to tell stories. Might be Yoda's cousin.

A gent who is not so much lecturing as confiding in you from his book-lined study with brightly colored figurines on the jumbly shelves.

Know who I'm talking about?
2016-02-29-1456768158-3671191-skitch11024x567.png

Seth Godin, of course, best-selling marketing guru, the 21st century's answer to Socrates. Seth is obsessed, in the best possible way, with Leadership. He is a connoisseur of principles and best practices on the subject, and he wants to share them with you. So you can use them. Starting now.

Any one of us can join Seth's tribe simply by subscribing to his blog, or reading one of his books, cuing him via YouTube or Facebook. If you're really committed, you can apply for his on-line altMBA program. Which I did, when he first offered it, last summer.

I'm hooked. I receive Seth's blog every morning via email--at 6:17am EST. Sometimes I share it. More often I swallow it like a vitamin and use it as an intention, a welcome foothold during a busy day.

You'll soon be speaking in Godinese: peppering your presentations with concepts like lizard brain; throwing your writer's block under the bus where it belongs; whittling your vague impassioned impulses about changing the world into actionable plans that have a shot; and referring to classic Sethisms, e.g., A manifesto for small teams doing important work.

I believe Seth's wish is to create as many leaders as he possibly can, and for a noble reason: to make the world a better place. Having stanched his reptilian inclination to poke successful people until we find their self-serving flaw, Seth does his job not for the money or the celebrity. He does it because he is very good at it. He is absolutely superb at teaching people to Lead.

You will not be shocked that Trust is one of Seth's ever-burgeoning principles for Leadership. It's pretty amazing to me that he can build solid trust with so many people who honestly don't even know how tall he is.

1. Earn Trust. "The most important question: Do they trust me enough to believe my promises? Without that, you have nothing.... Earn trust, earn trust, earn trust. Then you can worry about the rest."

2. Aim High, aim low, but Aim. Stop looking for unanimous approval. Decide who you need to reach, and focus on them. Don't worry about everyone.

3. Keep your promises. Accountability is key. Otherwise how can people follow you? If you say you're going to be there at 10, be there at 10. If you guarantee a post every morning, ship it.

4. Don't forget Rule 6. Ooooh, how I love Rule 6. Rule 6 is, do not take yourself so damn seriously. Take your goals, your people, your promises seriously. But do not forget to have a sense of humor, or you might turn into an shrill blood-curdler who nobody can stand, much less follow.

Bonus: Please close your eyes again, and think of a leader who inspires you.

Tell why. What do they say? How do they think? What do they do, and how do they do it?

Here's one: Christiana Figueras. The moment when she decided to lead: "Impossible is not a fact, it's an attitude. I decided, right then and there, that I was going to change my attitude, and I was going to help the world change its attitude on climate change."

Figueras's term ends on July 6th. One thing I know for sure: she won't let her tribe down: we will all be fascinated to learn what's next.

Now it's your turn.

Who inspires you? And how do they do it?

Bernie or Hillary, the Difference Is YUGE

$

The race for the Democratic Presidential Primary nomination is officially closer than anyone had expected even a few short months ago. With two neck-and-neck caucus results and a landslide victory for each candidate, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is showing his ability and intention to run a lengthy, competitive campaign right through to this summer's convention. Sec. Clinton's campaign scored big in South Carolina and can attribute much of its success against her progressive counterpart to their insistent portrayal of Bernie Sanders as a "single-issue" candidate.

Presumably, Clinton is referring to his boisterous calls for campaign finance reform which, according to Sanders, is the seminal issue of the 2016 election. He has said repeatedly that, since the "disastrous" Citizens United Supreme Court decision in 2010, he believes our country is moving quickly towards oligarchy and the destabilization of our democracy for future generations. Big money in politics is the "single-issue" that most directly contributes to the ails of the declining middle-class and the cynicism the american public carries with regards to the political establishment. It's easy to see why this "single-issue" scares the current power structure most.

Of course, Bernie Sanders is not a single-issue candidate and his policy proposals cover the gamut of issues, foreign and domestic. It's absurd to make the claim, as the Clinton campaign is shamelessly making, that Bernie's grand vision of reshaping our national priorities away from endless wars and corporate welfare toward universal healthcare, tuition-free public higher education, rebuilding national infrastructure, expanding social security, and moving away from fossil fuels are somehow myopic in scope. One possible explanation for the Clinton machine's repeated use and distribution of this "single-issue" canard is they are trying to focus the public's attention away from the real differences between them on nearly every substantial issue concerning American voters.

Where a candidate stands on the issues should be of utmost importance when deciding who to give your vote to, and, because of that, I am happy to expound on some of those crucial differences here:

Campaign Finance Reform

Sanders:
• Does not take money from powerful interest groups (Wall Street, Big Pharma, Private Prisons, etc.)
• Has not given any paid speeches to wall street
• Does not have a SuperPAC
• Campaign is funded by over 4 Million individual contributions (average contribution = $27)

Clinton:
• Takes money from powerful interest groups (Wall Street, Big Pharma, Private Prisons, etc.)
• Gave three speeches to Goldman Sachs in 2015 for $675,000, content of those speeches: unknown
• Has many SuperPACs, some which coordinate directly with the campaign by exploiting current campaign finance loopholes
• Campaign is funded by a majority of "large donors" (donations in excess of $250)

Foreign Policy - War

Sanders:
• Voted against the war in Iraq
• Is against a policy of regime change
• Wants to destroy ISIS by supporting Muslim nations in the region without sending American ground troops

Clinton:
• Voted for the war in Iraq, and has supported every U.S. foreign conflict since the 1990s
• Has supported regime change policies in Iraq, Libya and Syria and takes policy advice from Henry Kissenger
• Wants to institute a no-fly-zone in Syria and supports putting troops on the ground

Foreign Policy - Trade

Sanders:
• Believes that trade deals in recent decades have cost our country millions of good paying jobs by incentivizing companies to move their operations to countries with lower-wage labor forces
• Voted against NAFTA, CAFTA and PNTR w/ China and is leading the effort against the TPP

Clinton:
• Supports trade deals NAFTA, CAFTA and PNTR w/ China and said the TPP was "the gold-standard in trade deals"

Civil Rights

Sanders:
• Activist leader against segregation during the civil rights movement
• Marched on Washington with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
• Voted against DOMA
• Supported LGBTQ equal rights since he first ran for office in 1972

Clinton:
• Was a "Goldwater Girl" in 1964
• Supported DOMA
• Did not support gay marriage until she "evolved" in 2013

Higher Education

Sanders:
• Proposes public colleges and universities should be tuition-free
• Would pay for his proposal almost entirely with a 0.5% tax on Wall Street speculation
• Believes higher education should be a right, not a privilege

Clinton:
• Proposes "College Compact" requiring students to work 10hrs/week and parents to pitch in what they can toward the cost of tuition and depends on Republican governors not cutting education funding
• Does not think the education system needs reform
• Believes higher education is a privilege, not a right

Healthcare

Sanders:
• Proposes a single-payer, Medicare-for-all healthcare system to replace the current insurance-based system
• Believes in universal healthcare as a right, not a privilege

Clinton:
• Wants to keep the ACA as is and make small "improvements" to it, what those improvements are: unknown
• Believes universal healthcare is not a realistic goal

Environment

Sanders:
• Believes climate change is real, is caused by human activity and that we have a moral responsibility to leave our planet healthy and habitable for future generations
• Opposed construction of the Keystone XL pipeline from its inception
• Will not allow extraction of fossil fuels on public lands and will ban offshore drilling
• Proposes ending all gov't subsidies to the fossil fuel industry, invest in renewable energy production

Clinton:
• Was in favor of the Keystone XL pipeline until October 2015, now opposes
• Wants to reform fossil fuel leasing agreements for public lands
• Proposes ending "wasteful subsidies" to oil and gas companies, which subsidies are considered "wasteful": unknown
• In favor of "some" offshore drilling

Criminal Justice Reform

Sanders:
• Believes our criminal justice system is "broken" and needs reform to end institutional racism
• Proposes removing Marijuana from the Federal Controlled Substances schedule, allowing states to regulate marijuana how they see fit
• Opposes the Private Prison Industry
• Opposes the death penalty
• Proposes "community policing" where police departments are made up of members of the communities they serve

Clinton:
• Believes our criminal justice system is just "out of balance"
• Proposes moving Marijuana from Schedule 1 to Schedule 2 on the Federal Controlled Substances list to enable gov't funded research, would remain federally illegal
• Campaign accepted money from the Private Prison Industry up until late October 2015, her SuperPACs still accepts their money
• In favor of the death penalty
• Defends the 1994 crime bill and made a statement in 1996 that black youth were "super-predators" who needed to be brought "to heel"

These and many other critical differences can be found largely on the candidates respective websites. I encourage all American citizens to consider your own priorities for our country's future, to learn which candidate best represents your views on the issues and, most importantly, to cast your vote accordingly. As you can see, the difference between the democratic candidates this primary season is YUGE! Please choose wisely.

Pot of Gold St Patrick's Day Nail Art + $500 Nordstrom Giveaway

Whenever I hear "St. Patrick's Day", I always think of the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. It's something I always wished for as a kid - finding the treasure so I could share it with my friends and family. It's also my inspiration for today's St. Patrick's Day nail art tutorial.

Step 1. Paint nails with green base coat. I used Amazon...Amazoff by OPI, which has more of a blue undertone to it. I painted two coats on my nails.

Step 2. Using a small nail art brush, paint a line using black nail polish (I used Licorice by Essie) a little more than halfway down your nail. Paint the bottom of the nail black, leaving some of the edges of the line distinct. It should almost look like an upside down top hat.

Step 3. Dip the dotting tool in gold nail polish (I used Good as Gold by Essie) and press onto the nail. These are your gold coins. Reapply polish on the dotting tool as necessary and continue pressing onto the nail.

Step 4. Now you're going to draw the rainbow. Start with red. Grab A-list by Essie and draw a line starting from the fore finger and ending at the pinky finger. It should look like the rainbow is arching downwards.

Step 5. Repeat step 4 with different nail polish colors until you have created a rainbow. Apply Good to Go Top Coat by Essie and voila, you're done!
