Jimmy Carter Says He No Longer Needs Cancer Treatments

(Reuters) - Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter said on Sunday that he will no longer need treatment for melanoma, a type of skin cancer that had spread to his liver and brain, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper reported.

The 91-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner will continue to be observed by doctors, but will not need treatment with a promising immunotherapy drug that helps the body's immune system target cancer cells, the newspaper said, quoting his nonprofit public policy center, the Carter Center.

A spokeswoman for the Carter Center told the newspaper in an email that if doctors find that the former president's cancer returns, he will resume treatment.

The former president shared his news at a Sunday school class he teaches in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, the newspaper said, quoting Carter's niece, Mandy Flynn.

Carter started treatment in August for melanoma that had spread from his liver to his brain. In December, he said he was cancer-free but that he would continue to receive treatment.

At the time, Carter said he would continue to receive regular doses of pembrolizumab, a new treatment that is part of a promising class of drugs that harness the body's immune system to fight cancer. The immunotherapy is manufactured by Merck & Co under the brand name Keytruda.

While about 30 percent of patients treated with the drug experience significant shrinkage of their cancer, only approximately 5 percent experience complete remission, said Dr. Marc Ernstoff, director of the melanoma program at the Cleveland Clinic's Taussig Cancer Institute in Ohio who is familiar with the drug but has not been involved with Carter's care.

Carter said previously he would receive care at Emory University's Winship Center Institute.

Carter, a Democrat, was elected president in 1976, and served only one term. He helped negotiate the 1978 Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt.

But his presidency was clouded by economic problems and the Iranian hostage crisis, and Carter lost his 1980 re-election bid to Republican Ronald Reagan.

He has since won worldwide acclaim as a humanitarian and advocate for democracy, winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

Shall We Gather at the VA Site -- and Respect the Constitution?

$

The removal of a Bible (King James Version of the New Testament?) from a POW/MIA "Missing Man" memorial table set up at an Ohio Veterans Administration (VA) clinic, on the face of it, seems a trivial act at best and an abridgement of Christian rights at worst.

If we are very simple people, deeply passionate followers of Jesus Christ -- our version of Jesus Christ -- and not very concerned with much more than our daily lives and our own interests, we might feel either way. We can ask Congressman Doug Collins of Georgia to advise us because he has clearly revealed that he is one of these very simple people. Moreover, he has done this while continuing to serve as a chaplain in the reserves of our Armed Forces -- an egregious breach of military etiquette and regulation.

On the other hand, if we are thinking folks, people interested in matters larger than our own interests and daily lives, matters like the Constitution, civil liberties, our social contract under that Constitution, tolerance, diversity, the dictates of both a multi-religious and a non-religious polity, and perhaps harboring a sincere belief in a Divine Providence that guides the affairs of humankind, we cringe at such displays of religion when they are associated with our government, particularly our Armed Forces. For sound counsel and advice, we can turn to the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF), as tens of thousands of military personnel have done, well over 95% of them practicing Christians themselves.

As Congressman Collins and his fellow Apasionados por Jesus at the Family Research Council have publicly demonstrated, it is inevitable that these two views clash. One is purblind, selfish, close-mindedly ignorant and dangerous; the other is enlightened, altruistic, open-minded, and seeks amelioration of danger both domestic and foreign.

The US Government's advocacy of a specific religion is wrong. This is why James Madison, for example, argued against even having chaplains in the military. George Washington talked him into it because he felt the comfort many men in his beleaguered forces drew from the closeness of religious counsel and prayer outweighed the slight possibility that any citizen would feel oppressed or violated by a chaplain's presence (that said, the debate over the constitutionality of the chaplaincy still stirs itself from time to time). Yet I often wonder what those early chaplains thought of Washington's consistent use of such words as "Divine Providence" rather than "Jesus Christ" and his refusal to wear his religion on his sleeve, as Congressman/Chaplain Collins obviously does. One wonders as well at how the colonial period of almost zero tolerance for Catholics, overbearing Puritans, and proliferation of religion -- Mennonites, Lutherans, Presbyterians, Quakers, and others in the Middle Colonies -- elsewhere, colored the Founders' views of keeping a wall between church and state.

In that regard, the reason behind Madison's comprehensive objections were significant even in the late 1700s when a great majority of those who were religious were Christians and probably most were religious in some way, large or small. Today, there is no such reality. Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Jews, Jedi Knights, and many agnostics and atheists make up our very complex society. As a soldier who has seen modern combat, I can even relate that the old adage that there are no atheists in foxholes is patent nonsense. There are quite a few. (Incidentally, there would likely be many more if today the foxholes were filled by the middle and upper classes, but they are not; they are filled overwhelmingly by the lowest quintile in our society.)

Madison knew -- and the MRFF shares and supports his knowledge -- that one of the most dangerous forces in history was the church allied with government (notice I did not say "God allied with government" for that would be presumption of the highest order: for example, both the Germans and the Americans claimed during World War II that God was on their side while managing to see to the killing of more than 50 million people). As many crimes and depredations had issued from such alliance as from almost any other such relationship in human history. Indeed, that is why our Founders explicitly delineated the doctrine of no state religion whatsoever. Jefferson's eloquent promise to oppose all tyranny over the minds of men contemplated kings, mobs and priests, and not necessarily in that order.

So, removing that Christian Bible -- and at the request, by the way, of seven Christian veterans out of the total of eleven veterans who, together, initially reported its presence at the VA site to the MRFF and requested MRFF's intervention -- was not trivial and not contravening of Christianity. It was crucial to upholding the principle of separation of church and state while at the same time reaffirming that Christianity can flourish in America -- right along with Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, the Jedi Knights, deists, agnostics, atheists, and others.

The shame in all this is Congressman Collins and others like him. As a religious man myself, I feel quite certain that God is enormously frustrated by the extraordinary limits placed by such men on Her prerequisites.

Lady Gaga And Taylor Kinney Make The Polar Plunge Look Pretty Hot

Lady Gaga might live for the applause, but in her personal life she's all about giving back.

The pop star and fiancé Taylor Kinney braved the cold waters of Lake Michigan on Saturday to take the Polar Plunge in Chicago. All proceeds from the event went toward the athletes of Special Olympics Chicago.

Gaga also participated back in 2015, when plungers raised more than $1 million to support the local chapter.

The Golden Globe winner made sure to document the day on her social media feeds, sharing a cute snap of her and Kinney cuddling up together.

"We love the city of Chicago and the Polar Plunge for The Special Olympics," she wrote in the caption. "These men and women are brave and powerful. Me and Taylor love getting cold in your honor every year."

You can't have empathy without pain. Get FREEZING cold so they can feel your warmth. #SpecialOlympics #PolarPlunge pic.twitter.com/uq7abh21Cx

She also posted a photo of the two exiting the water with a shirtless Kinney looking less than pleased with the frigid temperature. "We had such a good time," she wrote. "Though I can tell Taylor's shorts were freezing in this pic ! "

The GOP On Fire

The GOP is a fire burning out of control, yet its powers that be are consumed with the effect rather than the cause. Smoldering for years, the rank and file of the Grand Old Party have been subjected to candidates consumed with issues unimportant and ultimately of no concern to the majority of voters.

The GOP behaves like an overbearing yet totally out of touch parent. Party leaders are clueless why their progeny have embraced the school bully. They expect their rank and file to support an outdated and useless way of thinking that is not only uncool but also impractical in every way imaginable.

Religious conservatism, anti-abortionists and family values have finally become inconsequential to people concerned about their economic well-being. J

Mitt Romney recently attacked Donald Trump rather than the reactionary attitude and elitism of a party who thinks we still live in the 1950's. Clueless as to why they can't retain working class and Hispanic voters, the GOP still continues to cling to the idea that they are a party driven by bible thumpers and stay at home moms. Despite candidates who run campaigns on the ground, the GOP still panders only to groups they seek to appease.

This is why Donald Trump is winning.

Republicans must accept responsibility for the void in a party hopelessly out of step with the times and realize that they have paved the way for Donald Trump.

It's not his fault -- it's theirs.

Beauty Find - Farmacy Clear Bloom Makeup Glideaway Cleansing Oil

Farmacy Clear Bloom Makeup Glideaway Cleansing Oil is a makeup remover made with botanical plants and a unique formulation that is perfect for drier skin.

One of the key ingredients in Clear Bloom is Farmacy's patented Echinacea Purpurea, called, GreenEnnvy, which is a potent natural antioxidant which helps protect and firm the skin.

This oil starts out thick and silky, but when blended with water, as directed, it foams a silky milky emulsion (Note: This is the best way to it use for makeup removal).  I used this in the evenings solely as a makeup remover/cleanser, but if you have very dry skin, this can be used as a general cleanser any time of day.

Once I had the milky texture, I massaged the Clear Bloom into my skin.  It immediately removed all traces of my makeup (including long wearing makeup and mascara).  After rinsing and patting dry, my skin felt soft, toned and completely fresh, with no traces of oil or residue.  As far as the packaging goes, it's so pretty to look at with the wood/white bottle, modern typography and flower images - perfect for displaying in the bathroom. - RLB

Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair

In January I started a new job and part of the perks was a gift bag with this little bottle of liquid gold. I've heard so many great reviews of the Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair, but I always relegated it as something that my mom would use. Gahdammit I was wrong!
Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair_review

With an increase on hormonal breakouts, dull skin, and a lackluster complexion, I needed all the help I can get. I'm not sure WHAT is happening but I swear once I turned 28 my skin was like #girlbye. When I received Advanced Night Repair on my first day on the job, I was excited because your girl needed skin rescue.

Advanced Night Repair glides over the skin very easily, and is quickly absorbed. You only need a half drop and whenever I've applied too much my skin does feel a bit sticky. That feeling quickly fades and once I apply moisturizer I don't feel any residue. Since this is a serum, I won't recommend applying it alone. I always apply a moisturizer afterward since my skin gets pretty dry in the winter. That said, I have had many a lazy nights where I applied this and crawled into bed, because YOLO.
Estee Lauder Advanced Night RepairOver the past six weeks, I've noticed my skin looking healthier, smoother, and more radiant. There was a week where I didn't use this (for no reason other than laziness) and I quickly decided that ANR was important to my routine. My skin looked D U L L without it. I had a few acne scars and I will say they've started to fade but I've also been using Clarins Mission Perfection Serum during the day time. When I use this my skin looks so much better in the morning. Acne scars are looking much better. My skin glows. I can't rave about this product enough.

I will have a full skincare routine up shortly because I've amped up my routine with some stellar products. I've never been happier with my skin (outside of those pesky hormonal breakouts). In short, Estée Lauder's Advanced Night Repair is a holy grail skincare item. Getyousome.

Black and white is a classic color combination. They contrast each other nicely: sharp, edgy black with soft, innocent white. The two together add an air of sophistication. It's one of my favorite color palettes to rock, as you can see in my Black & White Circle Skirt OOTD and Amour Sweater OOTD. Today's outfit features another ensemble in this color range. I've paired my faux fur vest with a structured white top and black pants. By the way, I'm head to toe in H&M!

As a huge fan of Laura Geller's Baked Gelato Swirl Highlighters, I was so excited to see this photo on Instagram of two new shades that will be launching on April 10th...Peach Glow and Charming Pink!

A quick Google search led me to the QVC website, where the original two shades, Gilded Honey and Ballerina, are being sold with a brush. In the description, it mentions these two shades, but they aren't available for purchase yet.
Peach Glow is described as a "warm and luminescent golden shade" and Charming Pink is a "shimmery and glowing pearlescent pink".
If you've never been introduced to Laura Geller's highlighters, you can check out my review of the shade Ballerina here.

{12 shades available at narscosmetics.com, $44.  i wear alaska.}

what i want from my tinted moisturizer, BB cream, CC cream, or skin tint is for it to enhance my skin's appearance with minimal application effort.  i want it to be easy.  for it to get in my daily rotation it has to be something that i can slather on while running out the door, but result in skin that looks a little bit airbrushed.

NARS velvet matte skin tint broad spectrum SPF 30 give me that, with a side of sun protection.  i dab it on with my fingers, apply a thick rim of bottom liner, a rosy lip and go.  its my new face uniform.   done in under a minute.  in addition to easy application and a gorgeous finish  the formula offers long term skin benefits. it contains skin healthy ingredients like rose fruit extract to refine pores and vitamins C and E for free radical protection.  in terms of face finish, it doesn't get better than this.
