Obama Has A Perfect Chance To Push Bold Reform Of Global Drug Policy

Reform advocates have their fingers crossed that next month's special session of the United Nations General Assembly will kickstart a fundamental rethinking of the global approach to illicit drugs. It's going to be the highest-level meeting on the issue in nearly 20 years.

Over the course of three days, member states and other entities will work to draft a consensus document that could guide global drug policy until at least 2019, when the UN is set to consider broader reforms to long-standing drug treaties.

A coalition of more than 225 U.S. and international non-governmental organizations published a letter on Thursday urging President Barack Obama to use what's been dubbed UNGASS 2016 to steer drug policy away from its historic reliance on prohibition and incarceration.

The groups criticize America's current approach to the global drug trade as "short-term" and say it overlooks "crucial reforms ... while failing to address new realities."

It's hypocritical, the letter argues, for the U.S. to still oppose drug legalization worldwide -- albeit consistent with those UN drug treaties -- when a growing number of U.S. states are legalizing marijuana.

"With respect to the administration, there are certainly some good stances and a lot of good work that the U.S. delegation is doing and that [the government] is funding and supporting in other countries," Dave Borden, founder and executive director of StoptheDrugWar.org, told The Huffington Post. "But overall, our foreign policy on drugs has not shifted that much."

StoptheDrugWar.org is one of the signatories to the letter, and Borden helped spearhead the effort.

Among its key concerns, the coalition calls for the U.S. to prioritize human rights over drug enforcement. That would mean, for example, taking a stand against the death penalty for drug offenses, a punishment that is handed down with disturbing regularity in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Iran is scheduled to execute 100 prisoners for drug-related offenses in the coming weeks, adding to its already grisly total.

The letter also encourages the U.S. to confront racial disparities in drug enforcement, protect the cultural traditions of indigenous peoples and evaluate the effect of international drug policies on youth.

More broadly, the coalition wants the U.S. government to shift its approach from law enforcement to harm reduction globally, even as similar moves are already happening at home. The groups urge the U.S. to advocate for syringe exchanges to prevent the spread of blood-borne diseases and to invest more in sustainable alternatives to illicit crop cultivation. They also lay out a set of criminal justice reforms -- to promote alternatives to incarceration, decriminalize drug possession, change harsh drug sentencing schemes and address surging rates of female incarceration.

The UN special session should not think small, said Borden.

"The idea of this UNGASS in the view of the countries that requested it -- Mexico, Colombia and Guatemala -- was that the world needs to talk about the big problems that the current system is causing: the violence and other instability that the illegal drug trade causes them," he said. "It's time to talk about alternatives."

Over the past few years, world leaders have grown increasingly receptive to the idea of decriminalizing and even legalizing drugs, though the majority have only spoken out after leaving office. In 2014, former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and the former presidents of Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Poland, Portugal and Switzerland published a report arguing that the current approach has led to massive health and social problems, while increasing the very crimes and violence that drug warriors cited to justify their tactics.

But real reform won't happen without more support from current leaders.

Based on its stance outlined in preliminary documents, however, there's little reason to believe the U.S. delegation plans to push for radical change. An overarching theme remains to "promote a society free of drug abuse."

Still, there have been signs that the old hardline orthodoxy is beginning to crack. Earlier this week, William Brownfield, assistant U.S. secretary of state for international narcotics and law enforcement affairs, said that nations might appropriately reach different decisions on decriminalizing drugs, so long as the goal is reducing drug abuse. It's unclear how this position will factor in at UNGASS, if it does at all.

U.S. policymakers are finally coming to terms with the failed war on drugs at home, said Borden, who has pushing reform for more than two decades. Now he said it's time to apply this better-late-than-never wisdom to our foreign policy.

"Most of us here in the United States have learned some lessons about where we've gone wrong on drug policy and criminal justice, so we have something to say about it," Borden said. "Other countries can learn from what we've learned, even if we're somewhat early in the process of changing things."

Wounded Warrior Project Fires CEO After Spending Questions

Top executives at the Wounded Warrior Project, one of the largest charities for helping rehabilitate injured military veterans, were fired Thursday after media reports raised questions about extravagant spending.

CEO Steven Nardizzi and COO Al Giordano were terminated at a meeting of the charity's board of directors.

The ousters follow a CBS report that raised questions about how the organization uses donor dollars. The report said the charity spent large sums on staff retreats and extravagant parties instead of on the veterans it was founded to help.

According to a New York Times investigation earlier this year, Wounded Warrier Project spent $124 million in 2014 -- accounting for 40 percent of its total donations -- on overhead. Other charities that help veterans spend far less on overhead. The Semper Fi Fund, for example, spent around 8 percent of its donations on management costs.

How Gay-Friendly Is Your Presidential Candidate?

$
0
0
If sexuality is fluid, then so is politics. Both exist on a spectrum, both evolve and change as we grow up, and both are fun in the moment -- but ultimately make us feel a little ashamed.

In a perfect world, Bob the Drag Queen from the latest season of RuPaul's Drag Race would be elected President of the United States. But until we reach that beautiful day, we must evaluate each candidate's flits and specks of gayness.

Candidate: Bernie Sanders

Why He's Gay: Sanders has most likely rested his little old man head at literally thousands of cozy Vermont B&Bs owned by stout, older lesbian couples who are both named Wendy.

Why He's Not: Probably thinks 2(X)IST is a section on your W9; knows exactly 0 percent of the lyrics to Jess Glynne's "Hold My Hand."

Gay-Friendliness: V High

While Sanders didn't officially support gay marriage until 2009 (relatively late in the game, considering that gay humans have been around for literally millions of years), he has consistently voted and spoken out against anti-gay agendas his entire career.

  • Signed a Gay Pride Day declaration in 1983 when he was mayor of Burlington (the town, not the coat factory)

  • Voted against DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) in 1996

  • Opposed Don't Ask Don't Tell from its onset

  • After hearing a Republican use the phrase "homos in the military" out loud in public inside the House of Representatives, shot back with, "You have insulted thousands of men and women who have put their lives on the line."

Overall Gay Rating: PFLAG Dad

Candidate: Hillary Clinton

Why She's Gay: Her "Let's-All-Go-to-the-Lesbian-Gala" power suits; possesses perfect Disney villainess credentials -- an aspirational, self-employed, strong woman in a misogynistic world leading a faithful army of minions to foil young, idealistic lovers.

Why She's Not: Though she is filled with camp value, Clinton's record hasn't exactly been death drop-worthy.

  • Spent more than 20 years on the "One Man, One Woman" soapbox

  • Supported her husband's Don't Ask Don't Tell policy

  • Stated her position as being "very positive about civil unions" during a 2007 debate

  • Went radio silent HBO cancelled Looking in 2015

Gay-Friendliness: Very High/Whatever It Needs to Be to Get Elected, Why Won't You Just Love Me, Goddamnit? I Have A Lot Of Good Qualities, People

Beginning in 2013 or so -- what's in the past is in the past, the point is, SHE EVOLVED -- Clinton's cadre of campaign advisors carefully measured the pros and cons of being pro-gay and decided to encode Hillary Version 9.06 Beta with measuredly evolved pro-gay software.

  • Now fully supports gay marriage, and on the day everyone made their Facebook profile pictures all rainbow-y, she tweeted, "Every loving couple & family deserves to be recognized & treated equally under the law across our nation. #LoveMustWin #LoveCantWait."

  • Supported the Equality Act of 2015

  • In favor of amending the records of the 14,000 servicemen and women who were forced to leave the armed services because they were gay under her husband's Don't Ask Don't Tell to reflect an honorable discharge.

  • Endorsed by the Human Rights Campaign

Overall Gay Rating: Jane Lynch from Best In Show

Candidate: John Kasich

Why He's Gay: Flaunting the hair of an older lesbian who has been in this line too long, Kasich has attended at least one gay wedding and says he would love a gay son or daughter.

Why He's Not: Kasich looks and acts like every divorced, single dad in the throes of a mid-life crisis -- the one who starts dating a college student with two first names, like Amber Lynne.

Gay Friendliness: Not the Worst Ever, But Far from Acceptable; You Know, Like Cleveland

  • Voted for DOMA

  • Did not support same sex marriage in Ohio

  • Accepts the Supreme Court ruling, even if he doesn't agree with it, like a good Conservative Dad

  • Prevented same sex couples from getting birth certificates for their kids

Overall Gay Rating: Mary Cheney

Candidate: Donald Trump

Why He's Gay: [Sound of 1000 supercomputers exploding trying to comprehend the question]

Why He's Not: Trump represents the straight, male id in ways that Rush Limbaugh could only dream. Every failing of the over-egoed, over-buttered, over-Umbro'ed "Big Dog Gotta Hunt" American male is on display whenever he opens its hateful flesh slit.

Gay-Friendliness: Um, Low

  • Thinks gays shouldn't be discriminated against at work, but also he now seems to like the idea of FADA, stating, "If Congress considers the First Amendment Defense Act a priority, then I will do all I can to make sure it comes to my desk for signatures and enactment."

  • Vowing to nominate Supreme Court Justices that will overturn the current gay marriage ruling, so get ready for the Honorable Houston Hooters Waitress and Bristol Palin

  • On the upside, you know he's encouraged countless pairs of quietly crying, naked young women to go ahead, kiss each other.

Overall Gay Rating: A Handjob from a Tacky Russian Heiress with 17-Inch Nails

Candidate: Marco Rubio

Why He's Gay: Rubio maybe possibly was at a gay foam party in the 1990s...or so the Internet says. He drinks water like he's perpetually on Molly, plus his name sounds like a party bottom porn star from the 90s who mostly starred in ranch porns produced by Catalina Video.

Why He's Not: Clearly, Rubio doesn't douche before he bottoms, because everything that comes out of him is covered in shit.

Gay Friendliness: Basement Level

  • Doesn't want gays to adopt, once saying homeless, disadvantaged kids "shouldn't be forced to be part of a social experiment."

  • Supports FADA, that b.s. that allows bakeries to deny fondant to same sex couples

  • Does not support gay workplace non-discrimination act ENDA (Employment Non-Discrimination Act)

  • Recorded robocalls for the National Organization for Marriage, because he is a roboprick

Overall Gay Rating: Could You Please Repeat That Part About Two in the Stink?

Candidate: Ted Cruz

Why He's Gay: His wife Heidi looks exactly like every pill-addled woman who realizes, two years in, that she married a gay man and thus will never be sexually satisfied for as long as she lives and is dealing with realization this through progressively more vodka.

Why He's Not: Something about his face makes me think Cruz likes boobies, in the creepiest way humanly possible to like boobies. Like, when he sees a nude mannequin in a store, he probably turns bright red, snickers and says "boooooobies" while sweating furiously from the chin.

Basically, if it doesn't come out in a couple of years that Ted Cruz breaks into morgues and sleeps with women's corpses and slowly combs their hair with a giant antique brush while repeating the words, "Such a pretty girl....such a pretty girl," I'm going to be shocked.

Gay Friendliness: Non-Existent

  • Calls gay marriage an affront to the Constitution

  • Kim Davis is basically his whatever a straight, constipated moray eel's version of a fag hag is. Inspired by her, he says he will pass something called the First Amendment Defense Act (FADA) in his first 100 days of office, which will protect religious-based discrimination of gays.

  • His face is what Charles Manson has nightmares about.

Metropolitan Museum Model Shoot

New York City's chilly winter temperatures can make it a challenge to stage a photo shoot outdoors, and renting indoor studio space can get expensive. Galleries and museums with tolerant photography policies provide an amazing, creative option. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is the best of them all: It's spacious, well-lit, full of interesting colors and backdrops, and the entry fee is by suggested donation.

I connected with model Scarlet Sage through Instagram, and we created this fun and varied set on a Sunday morning in just over an hour. Here's a tip: get there right when they open at 10:00, it will feel like you have the place to yourselves!

3 Reasons Ebony Magazine's 'Body Brigade' Cover Is Oh So Necessary

$
0
0
2016-03-09-1457493974-9860778-ebonymagbodybrigaged.jpg

A few days ago, Ebony Magazine debuted it's latest cover fiercely titled "The Body Brigade," featuring four beautiful plus sized women we love: style blogger Gabby Fresh, singer/songwriter Jazmine Sullivan, Orange is the New Black star, Danielle Brooks, and another well loved recording artist, Chrisette Michele.

The twitterverse and Instagram world lit on fire with praise, clearly for very distinct reasons. Not only is the cover necessary, it's also groundbreaking. Here's why:

2016-03-09-1457494027-4773300-ebonymagbodybrigaged2600x375.jpg

1. Body positive movements are in, but plus size black women aren't receiving equal representation in the typical mainstream conversation surrounding the phenomenon.

"If you Google body positive, most of the images show white folks -- even the cartoons," Quita Tinsley wrote in an article for TheBodyIsNotAnApology.com. "When spreading the message of body positivity, we have to be sure that we are including the voices of people of color. As a fat Black woman, this piece for me is very important. When fighting against body terrorism and oppression, we have to address racism and its impact on people's self-esteem and body image."

Last year, Sesali B, resident sexpert and cynic at Feministing.com also weighed in on this issue in a thought-provoking piece. She wrote:

"The legacy of fat/body-positivity is turning out to be not much different than the history of the feminist movement that it relies on to support its stances: one that prioritizes and privileges white women. Representations of fat white women have become commercially accessible and visible - for example reality shows to reveal the complexities of their lives and magazine covers intended to convince women that they can indeed be fat and confident. Meanwhile, fat Black women's representation in mass media is relegated to comedy (where our bodies become part of the act itself); and we all hold our breaths, waiting for the latest Precious joke to pass while simultaneously praying that Gabby Sidibe's current major role won't be her last. And while trendy fashion bloggers like Gabi Fresh and Essie Golden are certainly beginning to push the boundaries on fat Black girl visibility in a way that isn't strictly satirical/degrading, they are limited to the beauty subgenre (because for us the presentation must always be on point). Meanwhile, Rebel Wilson graced the cover of ELLE."

2. Ebony's cover story touches on the fact that reports often cite that black women are the most obese group in the country, as 80 percent of black women are considered over weight or obese, yet there's barely any mention of black men who also rank high when it comes to the so-called "battle of the bulge." According to Ebony:

"It's worth noting that nearly 70 percent of Black men are overweight or obese as well, compared with 71 percent of White men and 63 percent of White women."

This is further proof that black women are constantly held under a microscope when dealing with issues of body image and beauty.

3. This cover is so on point because, well, how many times have you seen beautiful plus sized black women grouped together on the cover of any magazine, including the ones that target people of color? Ebony is not only ahead of the curve, they've also embraced that fact that stories like this need to be pushed in order to change the lens through which society views beauty.

Hats off to Ebony for yet another amazing and provocative cover story.

Weil Zibeline And Secret de Venus (Vintage Perfume)

$
0
0

It seems that no two bottles of Zibeline by Weil, or its sister, Secret de Venus body & bath oil, smell exactly alike. I have two of each, mostly from the 1960s, and that's definitely case. They are all good, rich, fascinating, and dirty in the best possible way. Some are slightly more floral, while in others the sweet beast of civet is dominant. I love them with equal parts passion and shame, since I can't ignore the basic fact that Weil is not just Parfums Weil but first and foremost Fourrures Weil, and Zibeline has started its long career as a product to scent sable coats. I don't do furs, so why do I love Zibeline so much?

The answer is in the skank and all that surrounds it.

Assorted Weil ads from 1928 to 1948

I've long believed that the main justification for muguet is when it accompanies civet. Zibeline, and even more so Secret de Venus oil, offer a glorious and lush floral bouquet surrounded by leaves and stems, which acts as a canopy above an equally thick base of civet and musk. The depth of the composition in all its forms captures my imagination as much as it dazzles the senses. Fifty years after these bottles were produced (I can only try to imagine what Zibeline in its truly original form from the late 1920s and 1930s was like) they are crawling with life like a jungle at nighttime. Flora and fauna surround you from all directions,  pawing gently, not clawing at you, but dangerous nevertheless.

Zibeline more than Secret de Venus also has a honey-steeped wood in its core. Honey notes at their best are as animalic as civet can be. The sweetness of both presents a temptation, an illicit warmth that you're not sure you want to know where exactly it's been before it engulfed your skin with so much care and softness. Secret de Venus, at least the bottles I have, feels cleaner at first, thanks to more greenery, a spicy and crisp peppery carnation that jolts you awake. It is a fantastic after-bath treat, and it layers beautifully with Zibeline, probably adding to the more vintage perfume a touch of the top notes it had lost over the decades.

Both Zibeline and Secret de Venus have a long and convoluted history. I first read about them on The Scented Salamander back in 2006, which started my quest for vintage Parfums Weil. Elena from Perfume Shrine added more information about Weil's history, and Angela's review on NST of both Zibeline and Secret de Venus has perfectly nailed both. I'm with her: I wish I could travel back in time and hoard gallons of this stuff.

March Birchbox + H54F No. 37

This pretty much sums up my week.

I did terrible on my diet, decent on going to the gym and don't get me started on work. sigh

The good news is that this week I got my March Birchbox and while it wasn't 100% amazing, it did have at least one decent thing in it. Here's what I got:

Dr. Lipp Miracle Balm Don't let the name fool you (like it did me) this actually works for more than just lips. The back of the bottle says that you can use it for dry skin, cuticles, lips, eye brow taming, and then glossy cheeks or eyes. I mean really with the glossy cheeks or eyes but I did try this on the lips and then the cuticles. It's ok, not fantastic. I think the price is very appropriate though ($16.50) which makes me think that maybe I won't rule this out too fast...

Number 4 Lumiere dhiver Fluoro5 Elixer Restore & Repair Oil  The award for longest name goes to this hair oil. I can assure you that I will not be trying this hair oil. I'm not into it. It says it's supposed to give dry/dull hair some shine, but I'm not all about it. Sorry guys.

theBalm Stainiac  This is another item that I'm not really into. I've tried several different cheek/lip tints and have yet to find one I like. There's nothing wrong with this product, and it actually blends out pretty nicely, but it's just not my type of product. I am dying to try the Stila Aqua Glow Watercolor Blush which I think may be like this.

Wilma Schumann Skin Care Hydrating Collagen Eye Pads  If you follow me on Snapchat you'll know that I was excited about trying these out, but when I put them on my face, aside from the fact that they felt like I was putting snails on my face, it actually made my skin burn so I had to take them off. Based on that experience I can't recommend these.

Cargo Land Down Under Eye Shadow Palette YAAAS! I'm so excited. I've been dying to get my hands on some Cargo products and while I know they're sold on Kohl's, I never think of going there and spending some cash on makeup. I love how pigmented these shadows are, and I'm going to be picking up the palette I'm sure.

It's been a hot minute since my last empties post, but I didn't really take that long to finish these products. I just waited 'till I had a few items to write about. I loved using it at first because it was really hydrating, which

Spring 2016: Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Collection.

Tarte's spring 2016 collection Rainforest of the Sea™ is not only a beautiful makeup collection, it includes skincare that contains their new complex appropriately named Rainforest of the Sea™. This complex is tarte's next generation of ingredients that are made up of powerful antioxidant-rich algae and marine extracts to not only defend against environmental aggressors like all antioxidants, but these ingredients are designed to brighten and lend to a more radiant complexion. It's extraordinary to infuse that into makeup along with skincare that works right with the color products, don't you think?

Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Collection Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Collection

Everything from the packaging to the products in the Rainforest of the Sea™ collection are breathtakingly beautiful. Once I saw the Eyeshadow Palette and Lighting Palette, I knew this was a must-have collection for the season.

I ordered the Rainforest of the Sea™ Eyeshadow Palette ($34) the second I saw it. This limited edition eyeshadow palette features eight beautiful shadows that are so luxe, they are almost creamy. This is tarte's formula that is velvety; I've always been a fan. This new formula with the Rainforest of the Sea™ complex hydrates and brightens the lids with the creamy powder formula. It feels amazing on and lasts all day. They are pigmented, buildable and never crease. The palette contains shades for your lid, brow bone, lining, creasing — everything is in this palette. The shades range from ivory and gold to bronze and dark brown.

Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Eyeshadow Palette Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Eyeshadow Palette

I'm also really liking the Rainforest of the Sea™ Skin Twinkle Lighting Palette ($42). With three shades for strobing and highlighting that work for all complexions, this is a palette you need to look at it. These perfecting powders feel amazing on the skin and do what they are intended for in a beautiful way. These shades reflect light off the skin to give it a soft focus glow when use correctly. It's not that difficult you just have to play with them and make it work for you. These shades will seriously work for all complexions as noted. The middle shade is a matte shade and it's actually a setting powder to use under the eyes and brighten/correct darkness. This is probably my favorite power in the palette because I find a lot of brightening powders highlight the fine lines around my eyes, but being a matte brightening formula, this one brightens and seems to blur the area diffusing any lines. The other shades are luminous perfecting powders for illuminating the contours and highs and lows of the face. They are not hard lighting powders and just give off a beautiful, natural glow to the skin. The easiest way to apply the powders in the Skin Twinkle Lighting Palette is with the Double-Ended Highlighter Brush ($34) which was made especially for the collection.

Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Skin Twinkle Lighting Palette Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Skin Twinkle Lighting Palette and Double-Ended Highlighter Brush

The other standouts in the collection for me is the Rainforest of the Sea™ Wipeout Color-Correcting Palette ($45) and the Rainforest of the Sea™ Drench Lip Splash Lipstick ($22).

I told you how important color-correcting was earlier this week in my top color-correcting makeup post and if I had tried the Rainforest of the Sea™ Wipeout Color-Correcting Palette before then, this palette would have definitely made the list. This all-in-one color-correcting palette features six creamy shades that works with any skintone to conceal and correct things like dark circles, redness and acne. It also has shades to contour and highlight the skin. The texture is easy to use and blend over the skin. It does not settle into the skin or fine lines — it actually seems to glide over them and minimizes the look of imperfections while giving it a brightened, soft focus look.

The shades of the Rainforest of the Sea™ Wipeout Color-Correcting Palette are numbered and it comes with a visual guide so application is simple. You can use your fingers to apply and blend or use the limited-edition Rainforest of the Sea™ Color-Correcting Brush ($24) which does ensure a flawless application. Its double-ended and was made for applying and blending cream products.

Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Wipeout Color-Correcting Palette Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Wipeout Color-Correcting Palette and Color-Correcting Brush

I have two shades of the Rainforest of the Sea™ Drench Lip Splash Lipstick. I was sent the shade Top-Down to try and after trying it and really liking the formula (I told you I was embracing this matte trend), I ordered Skinny Dip. Rainforest of the Sea™ Drench Lip Splash Lipstick is a satin matte lipstick that offers full coverage with not too much of a dull matte appearance on the lips. This is more of a creamy matte lipstick that is super hydrating. Again, this is because of tarte's Rainforest of the Sea™ complex which is combined in the lipstick with natural butters and oils. That means, the matte formula does not settle into the lines of the lips like a lot of matte shades nor does it dry out the lips. I am actually going to order more. There are actually 12 shades available from light nude dark blackberry.

The Rainforest of the Sea™ also features a unique 12-hour Water Foundation, Aquacealer Concealer, So Fine Micro-liner, Quench Lip Rescue and some skincare products that are all infused with the Rainforest of the Sea™ complex. I tried the Rainforest of the Sea™ Deep Dive Cleansing Gel which did a nice job at removing makeup and cleansing the skin while leaving it feeling hydrated.
