How to Choose the Best Hair-Dryer for Your Hair Type

$

In the olden days before Sephoras and Ultas became the new corner shops, buying a hair-dryer usually went like this: go to drugstore, see selection of five or six hair-dryers, choose mostly based on price and/or cuteness (scoring one in a non-black color was a big deal). Flash forward to 2016, and we feel like we need to earn an advanced degree in aerospace engineering—and read at least 2500 product reviews—before even thinking about navigating the new realm of high-end, high-tech hair-dryers.

Yes, the humble hair-dryer has come a long way, and while basic models still exist, the expensive (or shall we say, "investment") versions boast bells and whistles that can significantly improve your hair and your blowout experience—provided you take the time to decode which ones matter to your hair. We're here to help make this less like rocket science. Here's a cheat sheet of common hair-dryer traits and which to hone in on depending on your blowout goals.

how-to-choose-a-hair-dryer

Wattage
What It Means: A high-wattage motor packs more wind power and will cut down your styling time without exposing hair to excessive heat. "If the motor isn't strong, you end up with more heat and less wind—if you think about it, that means you're 'toasting' your hair dry," says celebrity hairstylist Kristin Ess, who's all about proper wind-to-heat ratio in a dryer (the $142 Elchim 2001 has forever been her gold standard). Shoot for a wattage of 1800 to 2000. Bonus: High-wattage dryers don't burn out as quickly as their small-motored cousins.
Crucial If:You have thick hair that takes two centuries to dry.

Ionic (or Not), Tourmaline
What It Means: Ionic dryers shoot negative ions, water's ions are positively charged. That's the science behind why an ionic dryer is much more effective at busting up and scattering water droplets on the hair shaft, preventing them from soaking in and causing frizz, plus speeding up dry time. "The ionic feature works best for closing the cuticle and removing moisture from the hair, making the finish sleeker and more polished looking," says celebrity hairstylist Peter Butler, who glams models for the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. Think of tourmaline dryers as ionics on steroids; their insides are either made of or coated with this semi-precious mineral, which throws even more negative ions into the air—but can raise a dryer's price accordingly.
Crucial If: Your hair's frizzy or thick/difficult to dry.

Meanwhile, note that ionic can be a drawback if your hair is flat and/or oily, and for non-sleek hairstyles. "When I need volume for a sexier look with lift and movement I will use non-ionic," Butler says (he, too, swears by that Elchim, which is not ionic). "I'm careful to not over-dry the hair, robbing it of its texture and volume. Non-ionic assures me this won't happen." All of this is why one of the sexiest dryers we know, the $300 Harry Josh Pro Dryer, lets you toggle between ionic and non-ionic depending on your hairstyle.

Ceramic, Porcelain, Infrared
What It Means: Dryers with these buzzwords are designed to distribute heat as evenly and gently as possible. Ceramic or porcelain can be used to coat (or replace) a dryer's metal or plastic heating elements and other internal parts, to make the heat less harsh and more consistent in temperature—plus they, too, emit negative ions to speed drying and smooth frizz (see above). If a dryer's billed as infrared, this means it uses longer energy wavelengths to penetrate the hair and dry it from the inside out.
Crucial If: Your hair is fine and/or dry—but really, everyone can benefit.

Titanium
What It Means: Like ceramic, titanium is used to distribute heat evenly and keep the temperature steady. It tends to make for a very hot dryer, so isn't recommended for damage-prone hair but does speed the drying process. Titanium is also lighter-weight than ceramic—another reason it's a smart choice if heavy hair makes your blowout a workout.
Crucial If: Never really crucial, but can be a godsend if you have tons of hair.

Weight
What It Means: How much a dryer weighs. Duh—but this is a crucial factor for anyone with long hair and a lot of round-brush work ahead. Professional-grade dryers can sometimes be heavy because of their big motors/solid components, and think about it: If your arm goes numb halfway through your blowout, you won't finish the job with gusto (and there's no such thing as half a bad hair day—only full ones). "If it takes you 20 minutes to blow out your hair, choose a lighter model so you don't wear out your arms," Butler says. What's "lighter?" Drybar founder Alli Webb—who designed the $195 Buttercup dryer specifically to not strain her stylists' biceps—recommends looking for a dryer that weighs around a pound (tip: Amazon lists weights for dryers, unlike some retailers). "We all know the bathroom struggle is real," Webb says.
Crucial If: Your hair is long and takes forevvverrrr to get dry.

Bonus Features to Buy Into:
- A cold button—Cool air seals the cuticle, locking in your style and boosting shine.
- Adjustable heat—For fine hair that dries easily, lower heat gets the job done in a less damaging way.
- Accessories—A diffuser is a must for keeping curls smooth and intact, while a concentrator nozzle is key for straightening and de-frizzing.

Cost:
While there are always exceptions, a hair-dryer is one beauty purchase that you can justify spending more on. Pros agree that pricier dryers are everything when it comes to keeping hair healthier and prettier. "A hair-dryer is the one thing you can't buy cheap," notes Christian Wood, who works with Chrissy Teigen and swears by the $350 T3 PROi for its strong power and heat. "I think people make the mistake of buying cheaper dryers thinking they will replace it later." It's true—we panic when one dies and don't have time to research our way to "the one." Yet upgrading into the next price bracket can seriously pay off over time if you crunch the numbers. To get super general, you could expect a dryer that costs $100+ to last 5 to 10 years, while a $30 model could burn out after two. Plus, who can quantify the value of not-sore arms and reduced frizz? "A better dryer will last you much longer and practically do your hair for you," Ess says. A dryer that actually does our hair for us? Now that's a feature we'd pay $$$$$ for. (In the meantime, blowout bars.)

Michelle, Malia, and Sasha Obama's Hair Stole the Show at the White House State Dinner

We're going to do our best to phrase this post in a way that's proper and befitting of the First Lady of the United States of America, avoiding words like "sexy," but it's going to be difficult. Because for last night's White House state dinner honoring Canada's prime minister, Michelle Obama's hair was looking worthy of the most glamorous celebrity red carpet. Dare we say her big, shoulder-sweeping waves and sideswept bangs were throwing off Brigitte Bardot bombshell vibes (bombshell's appropriate here, right?)

We would say that our First Lady's new hairstyle stole the show for the entire evening, except that both of her teenage daughters debuted gorgeous, grown-up new hair looks of their own—befitting their first appearance at a state dinner. Seventeen-year-old Malia Obama's long hair was styled very Old Hollywood-meets-2016, sleek on top with a cascade of curled ends pushed in front of one shoulder. Sasha Obama, 14, went for a very on-trend center-parted double braid look, pulled into a bun in the back (accentuating the awesomeness of her almost-cat-eye liner and '90s-style choker). We can't believe the Obama sisters are old enough to be giving us hair goals, but it's happening. Meanwhile, how lucky is President Obama to be surrounded in such female fabulousness?

Kérastase K Lift Vertige Root-Uplifting Gel

Kérastase K Lift Vertige Root-Uplifting Gel - 75ml - $40 - a medium-fixation styling gel that guarantees a “higher hair” effect with delicate softness and shine.

The formula offers lift, suppleness and elevation along with a heat-styling protective agent - just apply to damp hair at the roots and using a brush and blowdryer, lift the roots for a volumizing effect.

I have fine hair with little noticeable body so I am always looking for something that will pump it up a bit but usually avoid gels because they tend to end up a sticky, stiff mess in my hair. However this one has a light texture that goes on smoothly and dries without being the least bit hard or crunchy so a definite win! I am far too lazy to do the whole blowdryer/brush lift thing though so I apply it to my roots on damp hair, tip my head upside down and blowdry that way - same general concept, zero skill required, great volume!

Available now in Kérastase salons across Canada and online at kerastase.ca.

Why pH-Balancing Cleansers Will Give You Better Skin

$

You slather on salicylic acid, pour on vitamin C, apply sunscreen 24/7 (hopefully, if not, that's side-eye we're sending through this screen)—but you still get breakouts, dullness, and what might be (gasp!) baby crow's-feet. What's the deal? If you're doing everything right in your skincare routine but aren't seeing the glowing results you want, the answer might be in a fifth grade science lesson: the pH scale.

flawless-glowing-skin

A quick throwback to chemistry class: pH is a scale that measures acidity and alkalinity. Zero is the most acidic and 14 the most alkaline, while 7 (which is where water falls) is neutral. Skin's natural pH hovers around 5, which is slightly acidic. "This acidic environment supports growth of the skin's natural bacteria and fungus, which is necessary for proper skin health," explains Joshua Zeichner, M.D., a dermatologist in NYC and the director of Cosmetic and Clinical Research in Dermatology at Mt. Sinai Hospital. Plus, it's the ideal environment for your skin's enzymes, which seal in hydration and exfoliate dead skin cells (which are good things).

At its naturally acidic pH, skin's protective moisture barrier does its job well, keeping out UV rays and free radicals as well as preventing moisture loss. But if the needle moves in the wrong direction—a.k.a. your skin goes from acidic to alkaline—it doesn't function as well. "The skin cannot protect itself as well as it normally could, resulting in dryness, irritation, and itching," says Dr. Zeichner. While it's technically possible to make your skin too acidic—in the form of a high-strength peel, which are usually administered and supervised by a professional—you're probably never going to pick something up at the drugstore and accidentally burn your face off.

So what's making skin more alkaline? "The biggest mistake with skin care is washing with the wrong cleansers, which strips the barrier," says Marisa Vara Arredondo, the founder of the pH-focused skincare line Phace Bioactives. Harsh soaps tend to be alkaline, and it's not as though you can scrub away and your skin snaps back to its original pH. "It takes the hours to recalibrate, which leaves your skin red or overly oily or overly dry in the meantime." Aging itself can also cause your skin's pH levels to creep up, leading to wrinkles and sagging skin, as can environmental aggressors (like pollution) and UV rays.

Beyond keeping your skin balanced and protected, getting your skin to the correct pH level pays off in other ways. The lower the pH of a formula, the more bio-available its ingredients are—which means more of it is being absorbed by your skin. It makes sense: If your moisture barrier is healthy and functioning as it should, it can soak up your products more effectively and efficiently (as well as keep the bad stuff out).

While cleansers are the biggest offenders when it comes to throwing pH out of whack, they're also the easiest way to lower your pH, which is why more and more brands are taking care to make sure the formulas are pH-balanced. You can even throw in a pH-balancing toner (yet another Asian beauty import). There, toners are designed with the sole purpose of lowering pH but not over-exfoliating skin, as many in the U.S. tend to do. Read on to find out which one is best for you.

Best for: All Skin Types
Phace Bioactive Detoxifying Cleanser, $38, saks.com
This has a super-low pH of 3.0 to 3.5, but just because it's very acidic doesn't mean it's harsh. It contains bisabolol and centella asiatica, two plant extracts that soothe and calm skin.

Best for: Oily Skin
Skinceuticals Purifying Cleanser, $34, apothica.com
The glycolic acid in this cleanser exfoliates and zaps oil without giving your skin that squeaky-clean feeling (which often leads to crazy-oily skin later in the day).

Best for: Dry Skin
PCA Skin Facial Wash, $30, beautybridge.com
This gets its acidity from lactic acid, the most gentle of all exfoliators, and pairs it with aloe vera. So not only does your moisture barrier stay intact, but you also get a ton of added moisture.

Best for: Sensitive Skin
Dermalogica UltraCalming Cleanser, $36, nordstrom.com
Oat kernel extract (a super-intensive anti-inflammatory ingredient) takes down redness and inflammation almost on contact. This formula also leaves out anything that could possibly make your skin flare up.

Best for: Breakout-Prone Skin
CosRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser, $12, memebox.com
The gel cleanser (for which the pH falls between 5.0 and 6.0) is paired with tea tree oil, which has antibacterial properties that help to take down zits. Bonus for any overachievers: The brand's website lists the pH of every single product in the line.

Best for: Extra Exfoliating Power
Mizon AHA & BHA Daily Clean Toner, $25, peachandlily.com
If you can see your pores without the help of a magnifying mirror—or you think your skin's looking a little more dull than usual—try following your cleanser with this exfoliating toner. Not only does it lower pH, but the two acids (alpha hydroxy and beta hydroxy) work together to unclog pores and dissolve dead cells.

Best for: Pairing with Anti-Aging Products
Missha Time Revolution Clear Toner, $28, sokoglam.com
Some antioxidants, like vitamin C, work best at certain pH levels (the lower, the better). Swiping on a pH-lowering toner after you cleanse basically guarantees that you'll get the most bang for your anti-aging buck.
